Lake Charles, LA – Idaho State softball went 1-1 day two of the 2023 Cowgirl Classic hosted by McNeese State. The Bengals opened the day with a 7-2 loss to UAB before dominating Texas Southern in a 13-0, five-inning run rule game.
It was cold and rainy for game one of the day between Idaho State and UAB.
Through four innings, UAB held a 2-0 advantage before opening up the game with a five-run fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Piper Tago doubled to left center and up stepped Bengal freshman Alyssa Yee. With a 3-1 count, Yee smashed a home run ball over the center field wall, scoring two runs and cutting the UAB lead to 7-2.
The Bengals attempted to find more offense in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to score any more runs, finishing the game with the 7-2 defeat.
Heading into the second game of the day, the Bengals looked to bounce back against the Texas Southern Tigers.
Bounce Back they did. Over the course of the next five innings, the Bengal bats came alive recording 15 hits and scoring 13 runs to force the mercy rule victory.
Bengal sophomore transfer Anna Berger got the start in the circle for the Orange and Black. Not only was this her first ISU start, but also her first NCAA start pitching. Starting the game, Berger looked to have a strong performance, the Bengal did just that.
In 4.1 innings pitched, she only allowed one hit and struck out two batters to keep the game scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Freshman, Rylee Peters came in as relief and secured the final two outs of the game to earn Berger the win.
The Bengals wrapped up day two with a 1-1 record.
Alyssa Yee hit .833 on the day with five hits and two home runs, a 1.833 SLG percentage and a .857 OB percentage.
Piper Tago finished next up with a .571 hitting percentage scoring three runs on four hits. 4
The Bengals have one more this weekend as they take on Texas Southern again tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM MT
