POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State softball split day one of the Gopher Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., Friday afternoon.
The day started with an exciting walk-off win against the St. Thomas Tommies.
After going down 2-0 early in the contest, the Bengals kept clawing back. First, Ava Brown hit the first homerun of the tournament, a solo bomb over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Then with runners on, Paige Simpson hit a one-run RBI single tying the game at 2-2.
The two pitchers then continued to battle, with Emma McMurray leading the Bengals for 6 and 2/3 innings.
In the bottom of the 7th, Alyssa Yee and Mailee Newman reached and Angelica Cano stepped up to the plate. Staring down the St. Thomas pitcher, Cano hammered a ball over the left field wall, scoring three RBIs and walking off the game for the Bengals.
The second game of the day, ISU vs NDSU, the Bengals held a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning before the Bison were able to put together an explosion of offense and win the contest 9-3.
Ava Brown and Paige Simpson led the Bengals day one hitting .500 with three hits each. Brown ended the day with a 1.167 SLG percentage. The Bengals hit .304 as a team with eight RBIS and four extra base hits.
In the circle for the Bengals, McMurray led the day with a 2.70 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched allowing two runs and striking out two batters.
The tournament continues tomorrow when the Bengals take on Central Michigan University at 12:00 PM MT and then the University of Minnesota at 6:00 PM MT.
