POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State Bengals (2-3) led nearly start to finish Thursday evening in Reed Gym as the Bengals defeated the Westminster Griffins 64-43 for the 2nd win of the season.
The biggest positive for the Bengals came in the first 10 minutes of the game where the Orange and Black could almost do no wrong.
Idaho State outscored Westminster 33-8 on 14-of-21 shooting from the field.
Maria Dias was on fire, scoring 11 points on four field goals, two free throws and a three pointer. Halle Wright went three-for-four in the quarter for six points. Kacey Spink was dishing the ball, racking up six assists and zero turnovers in the period.
The Bengal defense went off to start the game, forcing eight turnovers from the Griffins and scoring on each of them for 16 points.
The next three quarters the Bengals' offense slowed down considerably, never scoring more than 13 points, which came in the third.
The final period for the Bengals was tough on the Bengal offense. Idaho State only scored six points on two-of-22 from the field. The Bengal lead held though, and Idaho State came away with the 64-43 win.
Notes
· Halle Wright had the first double-double of the season for the Bengals, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards.
· The Bengals forced 16 turnovers from the Griffins, scoring 22 points. The Bengals only committed five turnovers in the game, a season-low for the team.
· The Bengals shot 11-of-14 from the free throw line, a marked improvement for the Bengals from the charity stripe this season.
· The Bengals held the Griffins to four points in the third period, a season-low for an opponent.
· Four Bengals scored in double-figures against Westminster. Piper Carlson with 10, Wright with 12, Maria Dias with 11 and Tasia Jordan with 11.
· The Bengals grabbed 15 offensive boards leading to 15 second chance points, but lost the overall battle on the glass 40-38. Wright led with 10, Spink followed with nine.
