Pocatello, Idaho — A leading provider of telecommunications services across Idaho, Direct Communications, has announced a commitment that will reshape Idaho State University's softball program. In a remarkable gesture of support, Direct Communications has pledged a generous gift of $500,000 to purchase and install a state-of-the-art artificial turf softball field at Miller Ranch Stadium. This contribution — the largest since the program's re-birth in 2010 — will revolutionize the playing experience for student-athletes. It will mitigate the impact of weather on the field, making it possible to play earlier home games and minimize cancelations. In recognition of this transformational gift, the field will be named "Direct Communications Field" for the life of the turf.Â
Â
Based in Rockland, Idaho, and established in 1954, Direct Communications is a family-owned fiber broadband company whose philosophy is to connect rural communities with new technology and cover more ground, faster than ever. In addition to their home state, Direct Communications has begun serving customers across Utah, Louisiana, and Maine, with a range of communications products including high-speed fiber internet.Â
Â
"Direct Communications was founded on small-town values and a commitment to supporting local programs and communities. In line with this tradition, we are delighted to help put the finishing touches on the ISU softball facility, which offers some of the most breathtaking views in all of NCAA softball," said Tim May, General Manager of Direct Communications. "As fans and alumni, we understand that Idaho State University is a keystone to our community, and we hope this contribution will aid Bengal athletes in their development and successful competition at the highest levels."
Â
The addition of artificial turf to the softball field represents a significant improvement in both performance and sustainability. Unlike natural grass, artificial turf offers consistent playing conditions regardless of weather conditions, ensuring that athletes can train and compete at the highest level year-round, something that has plagued the program for the past two seasons. Moreover, artificial turf requires minimal maintenance, reducing water consumption and environmental impact — a testament to ISU's commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Â
Pauline Thiros, Director of Athletics, noted the significance of the gift saying, "We are incredibly grateful to Tim and Elaine May for their generosity. Direct Communications Field will not only elevate our student-athletes' experience, but also reflects the strength and importance of our ongoing partnership with Direct Communications. Their continued support is transformational, and we look forward to the many opportunities this collaboration will bring to our university and community. There is no better softball venue in the Big Sky Conference and we cannot wait to show it off in person and on ESPN+ beginning this fall. This field will be home to champions!".
Â
With this recent gift and combined with contributions received over the past six months from Idaho Central Credit Union and Sylvia Papenberg, ISU has invested in excess of of $1.1M in the softball program. Thanks to these benefactors, the team has seen an increase in the amount of financial aid available to student-athletes, a new cement backstop adorned with branded padding, ISU-themed wind screens along the outfield fence, the installation of new protective netting behind home plate, and a Daktronics videoboard. With these best in the Big Sky Conference amenities now in place, the program will continue its ability to attract and retain top-tier talent and provide student-athletes with unparalleled opportunities for development and achievement.Â
Â
The significance of this contribution extends far beyond the realm of collegiate athletics. By making this crucial investment, ISU and Direct Communications are reinforcing their dedication to the local community and embracing the value that athletics at every level play as ISU plans to offer the venue to local high schools and youth teams for tournament play.Â
Â
"This gift from Tim and Elaine along with Direct Communications will have such a huge impact on our program. Being able to schedule and play more home games will be great for our student-athletes and for our community," shares Head Softball Coach, Andrew Rich. "Getting a turf field installed has been on the top of my list since I got to Idaho State in 2021 and to see it realized because of such a special set of people is truly amazing. I can't wait to see the finished product and to get to work on it with our 2024-2025 Bengals and the teams in the future as well!".Â
Â
As the Bengal softball program enters a new era, the field will serve as a lasting tribute to Direct Communications' enduring legacy of support for the community and its unwavering commitment to excellence in all endeavors.
