POCATELLO, Idaho – Head Coach Cody Hawkins wrapped up the first scrimmage of the 2024 season with positive thoughts on the Bengals' play in the ICCU Dome. The semi-structured scrimmage consisted of the first half warm-ups and drills followed by the 2
nd half, running full speed, full contact plays, and working on red zone situations.
The Bengal offense shined on Saturday, and the 'Throwin' Idahoans' moniker seems to be in full swing as the Bengal quarterbacks slung the ball all over the field and found the Bengal receivers in the endzone all scrimmage long.
"Fall Camp is always an exciting time," remarked Hawkins. "we have lots of competition and it can get tough but I've been really proud of how the guys have responded, I like their depth and I like the way they are competing. Over the next week, we will fine-tune some things before school starts and make the best of it."
Hawkins remarked that the defensive line was one of the stronger parts of the Bengal gameplan Saturday. Idaho State returns
David Rowe,
Cortland Horton,
Logan George and Joe Perez to the line.
"The amount of fronts and blitzes they gave us, I thought they gave our offensive line some communication fits.
Another Bengal that stood out on Saturday was redshirt sophomore
Julian Mason, who made multiple difficult catches on Saturday including a one-handed falling grab in the corner of the endzone.
"He has really stepped up lately and I want to give hats off to Juice [Mason]," continued Hawkins. "Seeing the vision and the ability to break tackles was awesome."
The next phase of fall camp for the Bengals is working on becoming experts on "conditional football" as remarked by Hawkins.
This includes getting perfect in the two-minute and four-minute drills, two-point plays, and everything situational that the Bengals could face this upcoming season.
Hawkins ended his statements with praise for the Bengals defensive backs and running backs, who have both made large strides in preparation for the season.
"I think our veteran group [of defensive backs], and their ability to complement each other makes them able to jump into different coverage looks and everyone can move to do what they do best, and the running backs, physicality and size has made huge strides from last year and I think that the room has made a massive jump and we will see big production from them in the fall.
