Key Quotes
On facing Montana
"Montana, they're playing really well. I think right now, statistically they're the best defense and offense in the conference in a variety of metrics. … Darn good football team, really exciting opportunity for our guys to play a big time football game. We told 'em it's not just a big game 'cause the Grizz are playing, it's a big game 'cause the Bengal are playing in it."
On Montana's offense
"It all starts with Gilman, their tailback. They just really have been able to play classic Montana football where they're doing a great job wearing you out up front. But they got good skill players… Wortham is a dynamic guy. … They're able to run their basic stuff a variety of ways and have a ton of constraints off of the stuff they do well, just enough to keep you honest."
On Montana's defense
"I say same old Montana man. They're big, they're physical, you can tell they play really fast. And in the secondary, they're gonna do enough stuff to counter everything that they do that you gotta make sure you do a good job recognizing their keys. Any Bobby Hauck team is gonna be really good on special teams too."
On fan support at home
"I always say you have to earn the respect and the admiration of your fan base. One of the great things about Pocatello is the community here. … I think you'd always love to see more orange in the stands than maroon. … I would love for those guys to have to experience some silent cadence. … We have an opportunity to make it loud in here and I would love to see that happen."
On stopping Montana's run game
"Stopping the run is always really important. … I think stopping the run is gonna be important in this football game because it's a Big Sky football game. That's where it always starts. … You're playing, I think, the best running back in the country at our level right now. Gilman's proved it year after year. … It's not just about stopping the run in the first quarter, you gotta try and do it for four quarters."
On Montana's wrinkles
"They do a great job throwing wrinkles, maybe small wrinkles that people don't notice… they're unique in their RPOs, they'll just leave first level defenders and throw routes behind it. … They're always gonna have a trick play ready for you. They do a really good job with their play action game. I mean, they're good at everything that they do."
On the quarterback situation
"JC's gonna go. … Operationally he wasn't hanging on to the football and he wasn't going to the wrong guy, he was just throwing it poorly. … Jordan will be our guy. Harsin has been ready and will be a package guy for us. … We're a quarterback driven offense, we gotta play well at quarterback to win. JC will be the guy, but you'll know when I know—if it's not working, I'm not afraid to try something else."
On taking the season one game at a time
"If you wanna lose by a hundred, you could look ahead. … If there's a train coming at you, I wouldn't be looking at the semi that's behind it. … We gotta be ready to go and you gotta take it one fight at a time. … The Big Sky Conference, it's the deepest best conference in America. You gotta be ready to rock and roll every week."
On ISU's specialists
"When your specialists can specialize, they're gonna execute better. … Mason [Lindberg] really took ownership of the special teams unit as a whole. … Trajan and Gabe, both different personalities, but came in and did a really good job and we're excited to own one facet of the game. … I bet you there's no specialist room in America that meets more or spends more time on the intangible component of it."
On Montana's special teams
"When you got a guy like Worthham, you're gonna let 'em take it from nine deep. … Their culture at Montana, everybody just talks about the returners, but it's because they have 10 other dudes out there that feel like they're playing in the Super Bowl. … The best return is no return. … We're gonna trust our guys, and you have to play really sound football, otherwise it's gonna be seven points."
