MISSOULA, Montana – A second-half strike proved the difference Sunday afternoon as Idaho State soccer fell 0-1 to Montana at South Campus Stadium in a physical, end-to-end Big Sky Conference contest.
Despite outshooting the Grizzlies 15-9 and earning four corner kicks, the Bengals (5-6-3, 2-2-1 BSC) were unable to convert their pressure into a goal. Montana (9-3-3, 3-1-2 BSC) capitalized in the 59th minute when Maycen Slater finished off a feed from Reagan Brisendine to secure the game-winner.
The loss snapped Idaho State's two-match winning streak and came against a Montana side that entered the game with just one conference loss.
Idaho State had several quality looks early, including a shot from Saydree Cooke that struck the crossbar in the first minute. The Bengals registered 12 of their 15 shots in the first half but only one forced a save from Montana goalkeeper Bayliss Flynn.
Montana flipped momentum in the second half, outshooting ISU 6-3 after the break. The Grizzlies eventually broke through in the 59th minute when Slater rebounded the Grizzlies' shot right in front of an empty net and buried her chance to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
Sofia Wolf and Talia Coury each tested Montana keeper Ashlyn Dvorak late in the second half, but both attempts were turned away. Isabella Winton and Mary Za each registered three shots to lead Idaho State's attack.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Hannah Wieler made one save and remained poised under pressure. This would markt the first goal allowed for the Bengals' true freshman in her last 3 appearances.
With the result, Idaho State drops into a 3-way tie for 4th place with Portland State and Sacramento State in the Big Sky standings with three games remaining.
