Bengals Fall to Portland State in Four-Set Battle at Reed Gym

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State volleyball came out strong but couldn't hold off a steady Portland State attack, falling 1–3 (19–25, 25–16, 25–27, 20–25) Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym. With the loss, Idaho State moves to 7–15 overall and 3–7 in Big Sky play, while Portland State improves to 10–12 and 6–5 in the conference.

The Bengals' offense was efficient, hitting .222 for the match while matching the Vikings nearly point-for-point in kills (55–59). Idaho State took the second set behind one of its best hitting performances of the season, posting a .607 mark with 18 kills and only one error, but Portland State's defensive adjustments proved decisive in the final two frames.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Annelie Wilson led the Bengals offensively, finishing with a career high 16 kills on a combined .419 hitting percentage. Marci Bell added 14 kills on .323 hitting, and five total blocks and 17.0 points. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Abby McClain added 15 kills and 16.0 points, and setter Nora Waddoups turned in another all-around performance with 44 assists, a career high 17 digs, and five total points.

Defensively, junior defensive specialist Chloe Heimlicher anchored the back row with 16 digs, while libero Jenna Werbelow added six digs and two service aces. Kadence Marsh chipped in 12 digs, 2 block assists, and one ace.

The Bengals battled to the end, holding late leads in both the third and fourth sets before the Vikings closed each with narrow runs. Idaho State finished with 70 total points to Portland State's 68, while out-digging the visitors 70–59 and matching them at the net with 10 team blocks.
