LOGAN, Utah Idaho State softball picked up a 13-2 run-rule victory at Utah State on Tuesday, improving to 16-10 on the season. Riley Wickum went the distance in the circle while the Bengal offense scored 11 runs across the third and fourth innings to put the game well out of reach at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Softball Field.
GAME RECAP: Idaho State 13, Utah State 2
Idaho State was held scoreless through two innings as both offenses felt each other out at the outset. Utah State threatened in the second, loading the bases with two outs on a pair of singles and a bunt, but Wickum induced a groundout to strand all three runners and keep the game scoreless.
The Bengals broke through decisively in the third inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Chloe McGreevey opened the frame with a double to center field, and Alyssa Yee followed with a single up the middle to score McGreevey and give Idaho State its first lead. Yee stole second base, and after Ava Brown flew out to advance Yee to third, Sydney Groves was hit by a pitch. Kira Day reached on a fielder's choice that moved Groves to second before Jenna Kearns doubled to left center, scoring both Yee and Day to push the lead to four. Camryn McDonald drew a walk, and Kennedy Dudley singled down the right field line to score Kearns and put McDonald on third. Dudley and McDonald then pulled a double steal with Dudley thrown out at second by the catcher, but allowing McDonald to break for home and score to make it 5-0 after three.
Idaho State poured it on further in the fourth, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring six more runs. Belle Navarrete led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a McGreevey sacrifice bunt. Yee walked and stole second, and after Brown struck out, Groves drew another walk to load the bases. Day singled to third to score Navarrete, Kearns drew a bases-loaded walk to score Yee, and McDonald walked to force in Groves and extend the lead to 8-0. Dudley then doubled to shallow left field, driving in three more runs to score Day, Kearns, and McDonald and push the advantage to 11-0.
Idaho State added two more runs in the fifth to make it 13-0 before Utah State's half of the inning. Yee reached on a throwing error, and Groves followed with a two-run home run to deep center field, bringing home Yee and extending the lead.
Wickum earned the complete-game win, allowing two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts across five innings. She held Utah State without a run through four frames before the Aggies scored twice in the fifth. Wickum improved to 2-2 on the season.
Dudley paced the offense with two hits, a double, and four RBI. Kearns went 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBI. Day went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Groves finished 1-for-1 with two walks, a hit by pitch, and a two-run home run. Yee reached base three times, scoring three runs and driving in one. Navarrete, McGreevey, and McDonald each reached base and scored, with McDonald drawing two walks and delivering an RBI. The Bengals drew eight walks as a team and were hit by pitch once, taking advantage of Utah State's control struggles to force 11 of their 13 runs home through a combination of baserunning, walks, and timely hitting.
