POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State men's basketball Head Coach Ryan Looney has announced the return of Tim Nolan to the Bengals' coaching staff, as Nolan rejoins the program as an assistant coach.
Nolan, who previously served as a graduate assistant with Idaho State from 2022-24, returns to Pocatello after continuing to build his coaching résumé at Montana Western and with the Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets. Nolan will replace former Idaho State assistant coach Devin Kastrup, who departed the program earlier this spring to become the head coach at Highland Community College in Freeport, Illinois.
"We are excited to welcome Tim Nolan back to Pocatello," Looney said. "He is a bright young coach, and our players will love having him on staff."
Nolan's return brings a familiar face back to the Idaho State program. During his first stint with the Bengals, Nolan played an important role in the day-to-day operation of the program, coordinating team operations, assisting with scouting reports, serving as the program's youth camp director, and contributing to player development.
"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return to Idaho State, this time as an assistant coach," Nolan said. "I can't wait to get to work with Coach Looney, the new roster, and be back in the Poky community."
Nolan comes back to Idaho State following a successful season on the staff at Montana Western, where he helped the Bulldogs to a 20-9 overall record during the 2025-26 season. The campaign marked Montana Western's first 20-win season since 2018 and was highlighted by three wins over teams ranked inside the NAIA Top 25, including an upset victory over No. 1-ranked and reigning national champion College of Idaho.
With Nolan on staff, Montana Western earned two First Team All-Conference selections, one NABC All-Region honoree, one Bevo Francis Top 100 selection, nine Frontier Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week accolades, two CSC Academic All-District selections, and five Frontier Academic All-Conference honors.
Prior to his time at Montana Western, Nolan spent one year with the Greensboro Swarm, where he served as an operations assistant. During his time in North Carolina, the Swarm earned the first postseason berth in franchise history. Nolan also served as the director of the Future Basketball Stars K-12 youth program.
Before his time at Idaho State, Nolan served as the head student manager for Wyoming men's basketball from 2019-22. With the Cowboys, he assisted in on-court workouts and served as the program's ShotTracker specialist, overseeing in-game and practice analytics. Wyoming earned an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022.
Nolan began his career as a student assistant at Casper College during the 2018-19 season, helping the Thunderbirds capture the Region IX title and earn an appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament.
A native of Casper, Wyoming, Nolan earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Wyoming in 2022 and his master's degree in athletic administration from Idaho State in 2024.
