Bengals Go 1-1 on Day One of Shocker Volleyball Classic

WICHITA, Kansas – Idaho State volleyball earned a win in their first match of the season defeating Stephen F. Austin, 3-1 Friday morning at the Shocker Volleyball Classic before falling in straight sets to Missouri State.

Idaho State Vs. Stephen F. Austin 

The Bengals opened the tournament with a strong 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-18), behind a dominant performance at the net from the Bengal defense, outblocking the Ladyjacks 10-5 in the match. Junior, Tana Howard led the way with a career high of 15 kills and a .471 hitting percentage. True freshmen Mia Walsh opened her Bengal career with a bang, going for a 14-kill 11-dig double-double.  Sophomore Nora Waddoups also had a double-double, finishing with a match-high 42 assists and 22 digs. Senior middle blocker & preseason All-conference selection, Jaydin Watts finished with six kills and seven blocks. True freshman Aspen Boice finished with a team-high of 24 digs while also adding eight assists. Annelie Wilson chipped in with 10 digs and nine kills. 

Idaho State Vs. Missouri State 

Idaho State could not keep the momentum going in their second match of the day, as the Missouri State Bears would finish with 45 kills to the Bengals 26 in a 0-3 (18-25, 20-25, 25-27) Bears win. Idaho State would finish the match with just a .040 hitting percentage. Mia Walsh and Annelie Wilson would lead the Bengals with six kills apiece, and Jaydin Watts would end with five kills and six blocks. Kadence Marsh tallied team-high's in both assists (12) and digs (13). 

Bengal Bites 

  • Tana Howard Had a career high with 15 kills and .417 hitting percentage 

  • Mia Walsh opened her Bengal career with 14-kill and 11-dig double-double 

  • Mia Walsh's 14 kills were the most by a Bengal freshman in their first career match since Tressa Lyman recorded 17 in her first career match on august 24 2012 against Arizonia state 

  • The first time a Bengal has had 24 digs in a season opening match since Bri Beal also had 24 on August 25th, 2006, against Wisconsin-green bay
