SPRING 2019 TUTOR LAB HOURS



 
Eligibility:
Freshman, Sophomore, and first year Transfer students
 
Rules:
In order to create a more positive academic culture in the Student-Athlete Study Hall, the following rules have been established.      
  1. The Student-Athlete study hall will be used for Freshman, Sophomore, and first semester transfer student-athletes only.
    • Upper class students will only be permitted under special consideration.
  2. Students must turn in their cell phones to the study hall monitor. If a student does not turn in his or her phone and is caught texting or using it in the study hall, the student will be signed out and time will be taken away for that session.
  3. Students that do not show up with study materials with them will not be allowed to check into the student-athlete study center.
  4. Food and drink (sealed waters bottles ok) are not allowed in the student-athlete study center.
  5. If a student does not have anything to study, they will not be allowed to check in to the student-athlete study center just to complete their time requirements.
  6. Minimum check in time for the student-athlete study hall is 30 minutes.If the student comes in for less than that, the time will not be counted into their weekly total.
  7. The student-athlete study hall is not a social gathering place.If a student is not checked in, they are not allowed in the door to visit with those that are checked in.
  8. Students will not be given credit for study hall time and may be suspended or disqualified from the student-athlete study hall if they are found to be engaging in any of the following infractions:
    • Lack of focus – not doing any work while in study hall.
    • Spending time on social network websites such as Twitter/Facebook
    • Other Internet distractions – sports scores, other email, and practice/game film etc.
    • Talking and distracting other students.
    • Walking around
    • Headphones blaring loud enough to distract other people.
    • Music playing without headphones.
    • Sitting in groups and visiting.
    • Arguing with study hall monitors about what they are doing/supposed to be doing
    • Attempting to intimidate or coerce the study hall monitors.
    • Going to the restroom for an hour
    • Checking in to study hall and leaving.
    • Constantly asking “how many minutes have I been here”
    • Standing in the hallway and talking loud/yelling.
    • Hiding in a corner and sleeping.
    • Cell phone use
  9. All students will be required to sign and date the list of study hall rules prior to using the student-athlete study hall.
 
Academic Best Practices:
  1. ATTEND CLASS!
  2. Sit closer to the front of the classroom.
  3. Visit with your professors during their office hours early in the semester and around midterms.
Connect with your professors: they are your number one resource
  1. BE POSITIVE!
  2. Be prepared for class and study sessions
  3. Ask questions: If you knew everything you would be teaching the class
  4. Adapt good note taking strategies; they will help connect the information to the lecture.
Do NOT write down every word, instead focus on key points
Do us a method for note taking that is most useful to you
Do read your noted often give yourself time to absorb the information
  1. Do NOT Cram: you learn less when you overload your brain
  2. Manage your time effectively: Structure is important
  3. Set Goals: if you have a plan and a focus, the goal is much more attainable
  4. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE: Finish assignments early so you don’t get behind
  5. Study outside of the Student-Athlete Study Center
It is recommended that you study a least 2 hours per credit per week
  1. Study for test in groups: someone may have an idea that you haven’t thought about
  2. Request a tutor early if you are aware a subject is not your strong suit
  3. Utilize the drop in tutorial labs: Professors and TAs are there to help
  4. Socialize: You never know who you may meet and what they are able to assist you with
  5. DO NOT live with the mindset of dropping a class; one low test score will not ruin an entire semester
  6. Rest your mind and body; make sure you are getting enough sleep
