POCATELLO, Idaho – Sophomore Nate Gross captured his second straight singles victory to open the season with a straight set win over Montana's David Cysneiros in Friday's non-conference dual match at Reed Gym. Montana overcame the Bengals 6-1 in the Griz's season opener. Idaho State fell to 0-2 for the season.
Gross' move up in the line-up from the No. 6 spot in ISU's season opening contest against Utah State Wednesday didn't affect the Bengal's playing level. Gross defeated Montana's Cysneiros 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) at the No. 5 spot.
In the second set, Gross jumped to a 4-1 lead before he strayed from his game plan. He was down 5-6 before he set himself straight breaking Cysneiros' serve to push the contest into a tiebreaker where he easily dispensed of his opponent.
“I changed my game a little bit,” said Gross of losing his 4-1 lead. “I wasn't making errors, but I was giving him balls he liked to hit. Towards the end I went back to my original game plan which was hitting balls high to his backhand.”
Even with the set going to a tiebreaker Gross remained level headed.
“I had proven that I could win points during the set so I knew I could win a couple of points in the tiebreaker to win the match,” said Gross of his thoughts during the tiebreaker.
Senior Danel Barrenechea and junior transfer Rodrigo Azevedo also captured a victory in the doubles draw. The Bengals teamed up at the No. 3 spot for the first time. The Bengals fought back from being down a break at 4-5 to overcoming Ben De Marois and Michael Facey 8-6.
Idaho State continues their home stretch when the Bengals host Sacramento State on Friday, February 4 in ISU's first conference match of the season. The dual match starts at 3:30 p.m. and will be played at Reed Gym.
