Penalty Kick Costs Bengals in 2-1 Loss to Griz

POCATELLO, Idaho -
Idaho State led 1-0 going into halftime off a header from junior midfielder Ashley Jones 2:25 into play.  However, a late goal by Montana and a penalty kick, both scored by Ashley Tombelaine, overcame the Bengals in a 2-1 loss to the Griz Saturday afternoon.

Idaho State scored on its first shot of the game when freshman defender Mikaela Carrillo threw in the ball to Jones who scored on the header 2:25 into play for her fourth goal of the season, her 12th of her career.  The assist was Carrillo's first.  The Bengals only unleashed one other shot in the first half, a header by senior forward Taylor Powell off a corner kick with 13 seconds remaining in the period.

Montana had 11 shots in the first period, though most of them far off the mark as just three were on goal.  Montana was held to eight shots in the second period but out-shot the Bengals 19-to-7 for the game. 

Tombelaine had four shots with two on goal for her two goals.  Her first goal of the game second of the season, was off a one-touch.  Her shot went over ISU keeper Carly Hutchings-Maloney's head to score at the 54:57 mark.  India Watne was credited with the assist from her cross. 

At the 80:30 mark, Idaho State was called for a foul in the box and Montana's Tombelaine was given the penalty kick giving the Griz the 2-1 lead resulting in the win.

Idaho State had three of its seven shots on goal.  Jones and junior forward Rachel Strawn both had two shots.  ISU keeper, Hutchings-Maloney had four saves on the day.

Montana improved to 5-9-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league play while Idaho State fell to 4-10-1 for the season and 1-4-0 in Big Sky action.

The Bengals split their time next week playing Sacramento State on the road on Friday, Oct. 20 at 5  p.m. and then returning home for senior day on Sunday, Oct. 23 to host Portland State at 1 p.m.
