POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State soccer has announced the signing of Laila Carter, a transfer from the University of New Mexico who will join the Bengals for the 2026 season.
A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Carter brings Division I experience, international playing experience, and an impressive resume both on and off the field to Idaho State. Standing 5-foot-10, Carter adds athleticism, versatility, and valuable depth to the Bengal roster.
Head Coach Dustin Downey is excited about both the player and person Carter brings to the program.
"The trend in our transfer recruiting continues with Laila, whose personality radiates and lights up a room," Downey said. "I love her character, her values, and what she stands for. Not only will Laila add positive vibes to our team chemistry, but she brings playing experience from the Mountain West Conference, and we plan to utilize her athleticism in our attacking moments within her role on the team. I'm excited to have her here on campus in about a month and start working with her on the daily!"
Carter appeared in nine matches during the 2025 season at New Mexico, helping the Lobos post victories over Texas Southern, Oregon, New Mexico State, and Grand Canyon. She logged 97 minutes as a true freshman while gaining valuable experience in one of the nation's most respected soccer programs.
Prior to her collegiate career, Carter excelled at Santa Fe High School, where she was named First Team All-State as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. She also earned First Team All-District honors and was recognized as a First Team All-Academic selection during all four years of high school.
On the international stage, Carter earned a call-up to represent El Salvador's National Team, an accomplishment she considers one of the most memorable moments of her soccer career. She was also selected to participate in the prestigious National Girls Academy Showcase, competing alongside some of the top youth talent in the country.
At the club level, Carter developed with Rio Rapids and New Mexico Soccer Academy, establishing herself as one of the top players in the region before beginning her collegiate career.
Carter said Idaho State stood out throughout the recruiting process because of the people within the program.
"The coaching staff and players were all that I was looking for in a program and make the team feel like a family," Carter said.
Away from the field, Carter enjoys hiking and painting and plans to major in Journalism with a minor in Spanish. She also brings a unique pregame tradition to Pocatello, making sure to eat candy before every match.
The addition of Carter further strengthens Idaho State's 2026 roster as the Bengals continue to add experienced and talented players from across the country.
