LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Nate Gross is nearly unstoppable in singles as the sophomore improved his record to 4-1 for the season when he defeated UNLV's Kasper Konyves 2-3, 6-4, 10-7 at the No. 4 spot Saturday afternoon. He captured the lone Bengal victory in a 6-1 loss at UNLV.
Gross improved to a 2-1 record at the No. 4 spot winning his first third set tiebreaker of the year. Gross in on a two-match win streak and leads Idaho State in overall singles record.
The Bengals began the match down 0-1 after being swept in all three contests. Freshmen
Gilberto Azevedo and
Diego Cavalcanti paired up at the No. 1 spot falling 8-4 to Mehdi Bouras and Bernard Schoeman.
In singles, the Bengals were led by senior
Danel Barrenechea at the No. 1 spot who was overcome 6-4, 6-2 by Bouras.
Rodrigo Azevedo, a junior, had a strong first set but fell short in a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Willie Sublette at the No. 6 position.
UNLV improved to 7-3 for the year while Idaho State dropped to 0-5 for the season.
The Bengals will stay in Las Vegas for another day to play UC Riverside on Sunday at UNLV. The match begins at 10 a.m.
