Gilberto Azevedo defeated Fletcher Keyes and Pawel Turzanski 9-8 (7-3) at the No. 1 spot in Idaho State's 7-0 loss to Montana State in a non-conference match on Saturday in Idaho Falls at the Apple Athletic Club. Barrenechea captured his second doubles win of the season.
The Bengals fell to 0-7 for the season while Montana State improved to 2-6. It is the first time Idaho State has played in Idaho Falls and they struggled adjusting to the faster courts.
Sophomore
Nate Gross and junior
Dan Buckingham nearly upset Markus Schleuter and Prithiv Sivasubramanium but was overcome 9-7 at the No. 3 spot.
G. Azevedo put up a fight in his first set against Keyes but fell 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Barrenechea was overcome 6-1, 6-3 by Turzanski at the No. 1 spot. Gross posted just his second loss of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 effort against Alberto Fuentes at the No. 4 position.
Idaho State will return to Reed Gym to host Eastern Washington for its Big Sky opener on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
