Bengal Men and Women Play at Weber State

Men's tennis plays on Tuesday at noon while the women play on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

BENGALS IN ACTION THIS WEEK

The Idaho State men's and women's tennis teams will be playing at Weber State on Tuesday and Wednesday in a non-conference match-up. The Bengal men will play on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at noon while the women play on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m.

ABOUT BENGAL MEN
The Idaho State men have played three matches at home and are 0-3 for the season. They fell 6-1 to Sacramento State in their first Big Sky match of the season on Friday. Sophomore Nate Gross leads Idaho State with a 2-1 singles record and a 1-1 doubles record at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Gilberto Azevedo has played two matches at the No. 1 spot for the Bengals.

MEN'S SINGLES STANDOUT - GROSS

Sophomore Gross is ISU's best singles performer with a 2-1 record overcoming Utah State's Lenny Whiting 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot and Montana's David Cysneiros 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) at the No. 5 spot. Gross' win over Utah State marked his second straight season opening singles victory. He dropped his first singles match of the season when he was moved up to the No. 4 spot against defending conference tournament champion Sacramento State. Gross took his opponent to two tiebreaker sets.

BENGAL MEN POST DOUBLES WINS

ISU has captured two doubles matches this season, both at the No. 3 spot, but have yet to secure the doubles point. Senior Danel Barrenechea and junior transfer Rodrigo Azevedo also captured a victory in the doubles draw. The Bengals teamed up at the No. 3 spot for the first time. The Bengals fought back from being down a break at 4-5 to overcoming Ben De Marois and Michael Facey 8-6. Colton Pate and Gross teamed up at the No. 3 doubles spot to post their first doubles win of the season together overcoming Joe DeGuzman and Josh Lorentzen 8-3.

CAVALCANTI CAPTURES FIRST SINGLES WIN AS BENGAL
Freshman Diego Cavalcanti, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, captured his first victory as a Bengal defeating Sacramento State's Mark Starcevic in three sets at the No. 3 spot in Idaho State's first conference dual match of the season. Cavalcanti fell in a tiebreaker in the first set 7-6 (7-5) but quickly turned his game around easily overcoming Starcevic 6-1 and 6-4 in the second and third sets.

FRESHMAN AZEVEDO SHOWS TALENT IN FIRST MATCH
Freshman G. Azevedo nearly crushed his opponent Frederick Peterson at the No. 3 spot in a 6-1, 6-2 decision in his first collegiate match. G. Azevedo captured the first five games before Peterson could put himself on the scoreboard and in the second set Azevedo opened with a four-game run. His talent moved him up to the No. 1 spot in the Bengal line-up.

BARRENECHEA HOLDS CAREER HIGHS
Barrenechea posts the most singles wins in a career since the 2007 season with 14. He is 14-30 (31.8 percent) over his career. Since 2007 he also ties for the most doubles wins over a career at nine with former Bengal Gal Horovits.

ABOUT BENGAL WOMEN
The Idaho State women's tennis team has played one match this season falling 7-0 to Utah State in both team's season openers.

WOMEN'S STANDOUT - SEVERINO
In her first collegiate match, freshman Laura Severino pushed Utah State's Brianna Harris to a tiebreaker in the first set at the No. 6 spot. Severino fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set, winning four straight games to take a 6-5 lead. She was overcome 7-6 (7-5) in the first set before falling 6-1 in the second after Utah State built momentum.

ABOUT WEBER STATE MEN
The Weber State men's tennis team has struggled at the start of their season posting an 0-7 record. However, the Wildcats have played top-notch opponents such as Utah (4-3), Brigham Young (7-0), UNLV (7-0), Portland (6-1) and Oregon (7-0) all on the road. The first home match for Weber State was on Friday, Feb. 4 when the Wildcats hosted Sacramento State in both team's first conference matches. Weber State fell 5-2 to the Hornets.

WEBER STATE MEN'S STANDOUTS
Weber State is led by Simon Unger at the No. 1 spot. Unger is 3-4 in singles for the season. He is followed in singles wins by Landon Barlow who posts a 2-2 record at the No. 3 spot. Weber State's best doubles team is Unger and Oliver Good who are 2-2 at the No. 1 spot.

ABOUT WEBER STATE WOMEN
The Weber State women's tennis team posted its first victory of the season overcoming Portland State at home 6-1 on Friday. The dual match was the first at home for the Wildcats. Weber State opened the season with 7-0 losses to Pacific and UNLV.  The team is 1-2 for the season.

WEBER STATE WOMEN STANDOUTS
The Weber State women's team is led by Eslami Naseem who holds an 0-3 record at the No. 1 singles spot. She is 1-2 at the No. 1 doubles spot with Brittiny Moore.
