Women’s Tennis Sweeps College of Idaho 7-0

Laura Porras did not give up a single game against the Yotes

POCATELLO, Idaho –
The Idaho State women's tennis team swept the College of Idaho 7-0 on Saturday afternoon for ISU's first victory of the season. The Bengals improve to 1-3 while the College of Idaho falls to 0-5 for the season.

ISU's victory ended the Bengals four game losing streak dating back to last season and is the first 7-0 sweep for ISU since 2006 when the Bengals defeated Valapariso in Las Vegas at the Bally's Hotel.

The Bengals swept all three doubles contests to begin the match ahead 1-0 for ISU's first doubles point of the season.

Laura Porras did not give up a single game against the Yotes. She teamed up with Katharina Marsela for an 8-0 victory over Sarah Roper and Cassie Low at the No. 2 spot and overcame Teresa Kucera 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Laura Porras improved to a 3-1 singles record for the season.

Lewis and Clark transfers Marsela and Rilee Moorhead who competed in the NAIA league previously improved their singles records to 2-2 for the season, as did Risa Fujiwara. Marsela overcame Molly Leadbetter 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Moorhead defeated Hayley Hutchings 6-0, 6-1.

Moorhead paired with Fujiwara at the No. 1 doubles spot to defeat Hutchings and Kucera 8-1. Fujiwara dispatched of her opponent Sarah Roper 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles position.

Laura Severino and Zamira Vasquez teamed up at the No. 3 spot to defeat Leadbetter and Tanya Greenwood 8-1. Severino went on to defeat Greenwood 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles spot making Bengals Severino and Porras the only players to sweep their opponents. Vasquez overcame Low 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.

Idaho State begin a busy week of travel starting Monday, March 21 when the Bengals play their second Big Sky conference match against Northern Arizona in Phoenix at 8 a.m. ISU's contest against the Lumberjacks kicks off a week of contests where the Bengals play six matches in six days.
