MOSCOW, Idaho - Both Idaho State and Boise State recorded four on goal shots Sunday afternoon, but the Bengals could not find the back of the net as ISU fell 2-0 to the Broncos at the Governor's Cup Sunday afternoon. Junior midfielder
Ashley Jones posted a game-high four shots and a game-high three on goal playing 90 minutes for the Bengals.
Boise State edged out the Bengals 17-to-14 in total shots but it was a tail of two halves as ISU notched just three shots in the first period to BSU's 12. The Bengals fought back switching to a 4-5-1 system that allowed the Bengals to put up 11 shots in the second period and held Boise State to five shots. However, the Bengals could not finish.
"They totally had us on our heels in the first half but we switched things up in the second period," said Head Coach
Allison Gibson. "We kept pounding them but we couldn't get the equalizer. We could not get a foot on it into the back of the goal. It was unfortunate because we completely controlled the play in the second period."
The Broncos go on the score board at the 36:51 mark when Erica Parks beat ISU keeper
Carly Hutchings-Maloney on a 1 v. 1 shot eight yards out. Shannon Schueren was credited with the assist.
The Bengals thought they had scored the equalizer 6:21 into the second half on a free kick shot by junior midfielder
Anna Pingree, however BSU's keeper Liz Ruiz went down in the process and ISU was given a foul and the goal was taken away.
"Tough, tough thing to swallow," said Gibson of Pingree's goal that was taken back. "It was unfortunate."
Boise State snuck in a final goal in the last 9:33 on a goal from Shannon Schueren who had assisted on the first goal. Kati Lucas and Serena Montoya were credited with the assist.
Boise State improved to 2-4-0 while Idaho State fell to 3-3-0 for the season. The Bengals continue the three-game road streak at Utah State on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Utah State at 1 p.m.
"Utah State is very successful right now and it will be a big test for us," said Gibson.
