Bengal Soccer Takes Down Conference Leading Vikings

Idaho State stuns Portland State 2-1 Friday afternoon

Junior Kiley Godfrey scored the game-winning goal in ISU's 2-1 win against Portland State Friday.
Box Score POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team defeated conference-leader Portland State Friday afternoon in Portland, Ore. The Bengals advance to 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Big Sky play while Portland State falls to 6-7-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Big Sky action.

The win gives Idaho State the all-time series lead and breaks a six-game losing streak to Portland State. The Bengals last defeated Portland State 2-1 in Pocatello on Oct. 23, 2004 and the last time ISU defeated the Vikings in Portland was in a 1-0 decision on Oct. 24, 2003.

“We knew what it was going to take to win this game,” ISU Head Coach Allison Gibson said. “We have been doing all those things this season, just not consistently enough. We needed to realize that we are all family and no one is going to break us. Sheridan [Hapsic] and our defense just played tremendously.”

The Bengals defense kept the Vikings in check as freshman goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic posted five saves during the contest and the ISU defense allowed just one goal despite Portland State's 20 shots with six on goal.

Sophomore Mikaela Carrillo scored her first career goal to give Idaho State a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute of the contest. Carillo found the goal with a shot within the box off the corner off an assist from freshman Vanessa Cabilan.

Junior Kiley Godfrey scored her second goal of the season on a cross off an assist from freshman Katie Flynn. Godfrey scored the goal in the 67th minute giving ISU a 2-0 lead.

Portland State answered in the 80th minute on a header off the corner of the box, but it was too little, too late for the Vikings as the Bengals took the contest 2-1.

“This win has really given us a much-needed shot of confidence,” Gibson said. “The Weber State game was just bad and we really needed to get a conference win on the road to get that monkey off our back. Now they know that they can do it.”

The Bengals return to action Sacramento State Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. in Sacramento, Calif., at Hornet Field.
