STANFORD, Calif
. – The Idaho State women's soccer team wrapped up an outstanding season as the Bengals fell to No. 1 Stanford Friday evening 3-0.

“I have never seen a team move the ball the way they do,” ISU Head Coach Allison Gibson said. “I am just so proud of my kids. They fought so hard at every position at every level.”

Idaho State battled hard against a very physical and aggressive Stanford squad. Freshman goalkeeper and 2012 Big Sky Tournament MVP Sheridan Hapsic recorded 10 saves in the contest and faced 31 total shots. The performance ranks her in a tie for 12th in program history for single-game saves and she is second all-time for shots faced as Chrissy Nelson holds the record with 38 against Brigham Young on Sept. 19, 1998.

“I think I could sum up Sheridan's performance when after one save, I turned around and looked at my assistant and said, 'That kid is unbelievable,'” Gibson said. “She has had an incredible year and a freshman year that will go down in the history books. That score could have been a lot higher if it wasn't for her point blank saves she had.”

The Bengals recorded seven shots with four on goal in the contest. Sophomore defender Taylor McBride had two shots with two on goal while sophomore forward Amanda Ellsworth had two shots with one on goal. Junior forward Kiley Godfrey also had two shots with one on goal while sophomore Allyssa Kenney had one shot.

Stanford got on the board early as Alex Doll scored her fifth goal of the season at the 6:59 mark with assists from Nina Watkins and Chioma Ubogagu. The Cardinal struck again at the 20:37 mark when Courtney Verloo tabbed her eighth goal of the season with an assist from Ubogagu, her second of the contest. Stanford scored its final goal at the 40:56 mark as Sydney Payne found the back of the net off an assist from Madeleine Thompson.

The Bengals played a solid second half against the Cardinal, putting up five shots with three on goal in the second 45-minute segment.

The contest is the last for ISU's five seniors: Anna Pingree, Laura Perez, Rachel Strawn, Morgan Olson and Alishia Cairl. Strawn finishes her career second all-time in program history in points (47), tied for second in total goals (16), tied for second in game-winning goals (9), tied for fourth in total assists (15) and fourth in shots (131). This season she recorded the second most goals in a single season with 10 as well as the second most game-winning goals with five.

“To go out against the No. 1 team in the country is not a bad way to go out,” Gibson said. “This team wanted to win a Big Sky Championship and go the NCAA Tournament. This group took us out on top and I am really proud of them.”

Idaho State finishes the season at 11-6-3 overall. The season's accolades include a share of the Big Sky regular-season title, a Big Sky Conference Tournament title, Big Sky Coach of the Year honors for Gibson, Big Sky Tournament MVP honors for Hapsic and all-tournament honors for junior defender Allyson Stainbrook, Ellsworth, freshman defender Vanessa Cabilan and Pingree.

Allison Gibson Quotes

I have never seen a team move the ball the way they do. I am just so proud of my kids. They fought so hard at every position at every level.
We left it out there and that is what I asked my kids to do. I wanted them to leave it out on the field and don't have any regrets when you walk off the field after the game and I can truly say that they don't.

It was a well fought game. Their athletes are gigantic. They are elite athletes and define athletics. Our girls have a lot of heart and are athletic but these are world class athletes.

This whole season there is nothing to hang their heads about. To go out against the No. 1 team in the country is not a bad way to go out. This team wanted to win a Big Sky Championship and go to the NCAA tournament. This group took us out on top and I am really proud of them. It was hard to watch those last seconds click off the clock.

I think I could sum it up when after one save I turned around and looked at my assistant and said that kid is unbelievable. She has had an incredible year. She has had a freshmen year that will go down in the history books. That score could have been a lot higher if it wasn't for her point blank saves she had. That is as good as gets of the shots she is going to face.
