POCATELLO, Idaho – Freshman midfielder Katie Flynn came off the bench Sunday afternoon and quickly became the impact player for Idaho State as she helped ISU (7-4-1, 2-1-1) defeat Big Sky foe Northern Arizona 2-1 at Davis Field.
The Lumberjacks (4-6-2, 2-1) scored first in the contest as Malie Tano scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Demi Schmieder in the 24
th minute.
Flynn answered not much after that when in the 32
nd minute she took the ball in unassisted for her first career goal as a Bengal. Less than two minutes later, Flynn assisted ISU's game-winning goal as she centered the ball to sophomore forward
Amanda Ellsworth who kicked it home for the Bengals, scoring her fourth goal this year.
“Katie Flynn is a phenomenal soccer player,” ISU Head Coach
Allison Gibson said. “I recruited her for that reason. I always say that freshmen come in and they either take a while to reach that same level they had growing up or they come in and it's a seamless transition like it has been for Vanessa [Cabilan], Lauren [Bermudez] and Sheridan [Hapsic]. Katie Flynn is capable of being a starter for us, it has just taken her a little bit longer to find her comfort level. If you watch her in training, she probably scores more goals than anyone else; she's more effective than anybody else and is very offensively minded. We have just been waiting for that to happen in games.”
Idaho State played solid defense against the Lumberjacks and freshman goalkeeper
Sheridan Hapsic had a season-high seven saves with just one goal allowed in 90 minutes of play, earning her second straight win at goal.
As a team, Idaho State recorded 14 shots with six on goal while NAU had 14 shots with eight on goal.
Nine different Bengals recorded shots during the game. Senior midfielder
Anna Pingree had one shot with one on goal while Ellsworth had three with one on goal. Junior defender
Allyson Stainbrook had one shot with one on goal and senior forward
Rachel Strawn had three shots with two on goal. Flynn posted two shots with one on goal.
“Being at home is just so great,” Gibson said. “Being at home with the home crowd and not having to travel is just tremendous. I am so proud of my players because they were able to come back after Friday's very emotional win and perform well again today. I think that people that understand soccer understand that's very hard to do.”
Idaho State's next challenge is on the road against Big Sky rival Weber State Saturday, Oct. 6 at noon.
