Soccer Hosts EWU, Montana to Open Big Sky Play

POCATELLO, Idaho- The returning Big Sky Champion Idaho State soccer team begins conference play hosting Eastern Washington on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. and Montana on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m.

Idaho State is coming off a 1-0 road win over Wyoming in the non-conference finale. Senior defender/midfielder Allyson Stainbrook won the match on a free kick in the 102nd minute.

The Eagles handed Idaho State one of two conference losses in 2012, a 2-1 setback in Cheney. The Bengals and Grizzlies faced off twice in 2012. The first was a 1-1 draw in Missoula and the second meeting was in the Big Sky title match, which ended in a 0-0 tie. The Bengals secured the title with a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks.

LAST MATCH: WYOMING
Allyson Stainbrook sent a free kick into the back of the net in the 102nd minute to claim a 1-0 road win over Wyoming in the last non-conference match of 2013.

Stainbrook was moved to the midfield from the backline late in the second half and came up big with the game-winner during the second overtime.

The Bengal defense was anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic, who tallied seven saves in her second shutout of the season.

The Bengal backline played exceptionally well to help Hapsic score the shutout.

ABOUT EASTERN WASHINGTON
The Eagles finished non-conference play with a 2-7 record. Their two wins came against Idaho (2-1) and North Dakota State (3-0).

Junior Cassie Black leads the Eagles with three goals and goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery boasts an impressive 1.62 goal allowed average.

Veteran coach George Hageage leads the Eagles in his 14th season where he has produced 85 All-Big Sky players, six All-Big Sky tournament honorees, two Big Sky Conference Defensive Players of the Year, one Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year and 189 Big Sky All-Academic honorees.

The Eagles were picked to finish eighth in the Big Sky by the coaches.

ABOUT MONTANA

The Grizzlies, along with ISU and Portland State were the 2012 Big Sky Conference Regular Season Co-Champions.

Montana returns six starters in 2013, four of whom were honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference in 2012. Lost to graduation was 2012 Big Sky Defensive MVP Lauren Costa and co-Offensive MVP Erin Craig.

Montana closed out a tough non-conference schedule with a win over Nevada. The Grizzlies head into Big Sky play with a 3-3-3 record. Montana has not lost at home but is 0-3-1 on the road.

Montana Coach Mark Plakorus is in his third season as the Head Coach. In his first two seasons, the Griz compiled an 18-18-7 record with one appearance in the NCAA tournament (2011) and one regular season title (2012). The Griz lost the 2012 title on PKs  (5-4) after playing the Bengals to a 0-0 tie.
