Live VideoPOCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team heads out for their second straight road match as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to face the Lobos of New Mexico. This will be the second meeting between the two squads. New Mexico leads the series 1-0 after defeating ISU 2-0 in Albuquerque on Aug. 21, 2009.
LAST MATCH: IDAHO STATE PREVAILS IN OT; DEFEATS WESTMINSTER 2-1Idaho State defeated a strong Westminster squad 2-1 in overtime on Sunday, Aug. 30 at Dumke Field in Salt Lake City. The win marked the 70th career victory for Head Coach
Allison Gibson and improved the Bengals record to 1-3-0 on the season.
This match was a tough test for the Bengals in so many ways. It was on the road against a very skilled Griffins team on a turf field in 90-plus degree heat. The team traveled the same day, which is nearly unheard of in college athletics, covering 170 miles before stepping on the pitch. But Gibson welcomed the test for her young squad.
The Bengals stepped up to the test and showed up composed and aggressive, striking early with a goal from
Maria Sanchez in the 21st minute. ISU remained in control for the remainder of the half, only allowing two shots from the Griffins in the first.
In the second half, ISU outshot the Griffins 12-10, including 7-4 on goal, but Westminster found an opening in the 83rd minute and capitalized, tying up the score 1-1. A final attempt by the Griffins fell short, so the game headed to OT.
Overtime was all Idaho State. The Bengals recorded two shots in less than three minutes and prevented the Griffins from attempting a shot. Sanchez scored the game-winner in teh 93rd minute off a through ball from freshman
Nikolina Musto from about 25 yards out, resulting in the immediate end of the match.
ABOUT NEW MEXICONew Mexico sits at 1-3-0 after their first four matches of the 2015 season. The Lobos have had a tough start to the 2015 season after facing the 2014 national champs and No.1 Florida State (L, 1-3), No. 15 Texas Tech (L, 0-1), New Mexico State (W, 1-0) and Colorado (L, 0-4).
The Lobos return an astonishing 28 players from the 2014 squad that posted an overall 10-6-2 record (7-2-2 Mountain West) and lost in overtime in the semifinals of the conference tournament. That incredible number of returners also accounts for nearly 90 percent of 2014's production.
Notable returners for UNM include all-Mountain West second team selections Cassie Ulrich (GK), Dylann O'Connor (MF) and Emily Chavez (D) as well as the last two Lobos to record hat tricks, Ruth Bruciaga and Lindsey Guice.
New Mexico is coached by first-year Head Coach Heather Dyche. Dyche enters her first year in collegiate coaching after a successful career at the youth level.
