POCATELLO, Idaho –
The Idaho State men's tennis team competed in its first home meet of the 2016 season Saturday, dropping its matchup against Grand Canyon University 7-0 inside Reed Gym.

"Grand Canyon is another quality team," said Head Coach Mark Rodel. "They've been one of the top-tier teams the last three years. Overall I'm very happy with the progress and the competitive nature of the match and the overall attitude of our team."

Freshman Francis Filipovich claimed the lone match win for ISU at the No. 5 singles position. After falling behind Meidy Chazeau with a 6-3 loss in the first set, he battled back in a 7-6 win to tie the match at a set apiece. Filipovich earned the victory with a 10-7 tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.

"We made some small adjustments, narrowing his focus and trying to get him more in the moment as far as being there point by point," Rodel said. "Francis made a huge step forward as far as his competitiveness. He just demonstrated absolute grit and determination to pull that one out."

Junior William Edin forced a tiebreaker for the second consecutive week in the No. 2 singles position. After dropping the first set 7-6, he flipped the tables and forced a tie breaker with his 7-6 second set victory. In the tiebreaker, Grand Canyon's Felix Schueller edged Edin 10-5 to claim the closest match of the day.

"Today's match that he played was exceptionally high quality," Rodel said. "William played another fantastic match and I wouldn't say that he lost the match so much as the other guy won it."

William and Sebastian Edin just missed claiming the first doubles victory of the season, falling 7-6 in the No. 1 doubles match.

"I'm very proud of the guys," Rodel said. "It's a brand new team and they're competing very well overall. They're playing like they believe they can compete and I think we're building nicely towards the Big Sky schedule."

The Bengals are back on the road tomorrow to face Utah State in Logan, Utah at 1 p.m.
