POCATELLO, Idaho -- The Idaho State women's tennis team earned its second win of the season Saturday afternoon with a tough 4-3 victory over visiting Grand Canyon. The Bengals sit at 2-3 on the season for the best start since going 2-2 during the 2012 spring season.

"This was a big upset for us," Head Coach Gretchen Maloney said. "The girls are just starting to believe. They are getting used to playing tougher teams, and so they are learning how to play tougher tennis. It's cool to see them believe and then go out and do it."

Idaho State started the afternoon by winning the doubles point after a solid performance from seniors Laura Theus and Svenja Tegtmeier who defeated GCU's Alexandra Petrzalkov and Kylie Waschuk 6-4. Senior Wiebke Boeckmann and freshman Nonie Alexandersen followed suit, grinding out a tough 7-6 win over Tatum Prudhomme and Susan Baklini.

"Doubles was phenomenal for us today," Maloney said. "We are starting to get to the net and attack a lot more. We are serving great and gaining the momentum out of doubles play."

The momentum swung in favor of the Bengals following doubles play, as ISU won three of the first four singles matches. GCU's Prudhomme defeated senior Kasey Bacon 6-3, 6-2 to start singles play, but Alexandersen, Boeckmann and Tegtmeier each won their respective singles matches to give ISU the advantage over GCU.

"We almost didn't win the match as Svenja [Tegtmeier] was down in the third set of her match," Maloney said. "She pulled it out with an amazing third set. She really battled. She dug down deep and figured out a way to win. I give her huge props."

Tegtmeier bested GCU's Petrzalkov at the No. 2 singles position 7-5, 3-6 and 7-5 for ISU's fourth and final point of the day.

The Bengals are back in action Feb. 19 at Boise State at 6 p.m.
