Men's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker at Portland State

VANCOUVER, Wash. – The Idaho State men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision against Portland State at Green Club Meadows Monday afternoon in a match that came down to the final set at the No. 6 singles position.

Portland State swept doubles play with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 doubles position and a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 position to claim the doubles point.

The Bengals responded, winning the first singles match, as junior Josh Goodwin defeated Wil Cochrane 6-3, 6-2 to remain undefeated on the weekend and give ISU the early 1-0 advantage in singles play and tie the match 1-all. The Bengals fell 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position and dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the No. 1 position to give the Vikings a 3-1 edge in the match.

Freshman Francis Filipovich earned the three-set victory over Brent Wheeler to remain unbeaten on the weekend and even singles play 2-2. Junior William Edin followed suit, earning the 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 win over Ethan Lopez to remain undefeated on the weekend and tie the match 3-3 heading into the final match.

The final point and ultimately the match ended with the No. 6 singles position. Junior Haseeb Khan battled for the first set 7-5 win over Ian Risenhoover, but fell the following two sets 6-3, 6-3 to give PSU its third singles win and the 4-3 match win.

"This was a heartbreaking loss," Head Coach Mark Rodel said. "It came down to the final singles match at the No. 6 position. I have a team that is making ISU proud with how they represent our university through their professional manner, grit and determination. We will regroup for the next challenge against Southern Utah and Northern Arizona."

Idaho State returns to the court  March 18 at 2 p.m. against visiting Southern Utah.
