Men's Tennis Battles, Captures Win at Northern Colorado

Final Results PDF

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team outlasted Northern Colorado 4-3 Saturday morning at the Butler-Hancock Tennis Complex to snap a three-match losing streak. The Bengals earned the elusive doubles point early and battled in singles play for the win.

"It was a real tough match today," Head Coach Mark Rodel said. "Northern Colorado is a very similar team, and they have also had several close matches this season. Our guys were able to pull off the doubles point today and that made the biggest difference. The Edin brothers came up huge for us in the final doubles match to clinch that doubles point."

Northern Colorado (6-16, 3-8 BSC) earned the first doubles win as freshman Francis Filipovich and junior Haseeb Khan fell to Hayden Cramer and Jacob Sheldon 6-3 at the No. 3 doubles position. However, juniors Bjorn Scheepbouwer and Josh Goodwin evened things with a 7-5 win over Connor Finerty and Eric Scheurmans at the No. 2 doubles position. Juniors William Edin and Sebastian Edin secured the doubles point at the No. 1 doubles position with a 7-6 win over Austin Mayo and Cassell King.

"In singles play, all the matches we won were three-setter tie-breakers," Rodel said. "It just goes to show how strong our guys have been fighting all year. These guys never, ever quit, and I think that showed today. Everyone played very well, and I think the hard work is paying off."

Four of the six singles matches went to three sets, but Idaho State (7-11, 3-5 BSC) matched the Bears, winning three each in singles play. Northern Colorado claimed wins at the Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles positions, while Idaho State earned the win at Nos. 3, 4, and 5.

The Bengals continue play April 17 at 4 p.m. at North Dakota. The match, originally scheduled for 9 a.m., has been rescheduled due to Idaho State's travel issues related to weather.
