Men's Tennis Falls to Sacramento State

CHUBBUCK, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team battled visiting Sacramento State but fell to the Hornets 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Osborn Tennis Complex at Capell Park.

The Bengals dropped the doubles point early after losing 2-of-3 doubles matches to Sac State. Freshman Francis Filipovich and junior Haseeb Khan earned Idaho State's (6-10, 2-5 BSC) lone doubles win with a 6-2 rout of CSUS's Uli Vollath and Christopher Clayton to open doubles play. Sac State (10-13, 8-2 BSC) battled back, winning 6-4 and 6-3 at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles positions respectively to earn the doubles point.

In singles play, ISU forced four matches to three sets and earned the first set win in all but one singles match. However, the Bengals were unable to outlast the visiting Hornets as the Bengals earned just two singles wins. Junior Josh Goodwin defeated Sac's Clayton 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles position and Filipovich came up big once again for ISU, besting Dom Miller 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position.

"It was a tough match today," Head Coach Mark Rodel said. "Our guys competed well, taking four of the six singles matches to three sets. Francis [Filipovich] and Josh [Goodwin] played outstanding tennis for us today…We have stayed positive and competed in every match, and it takes some time to get thing on track to where we know we can be a contender for the Big Sky and beyond."

Idaho State hits the road to face Weber State April 10 at 10 a.m. in Ogden, Utah.
