BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team suffered its second loss of the season with a 7-0 defeat against Boise State at the Eagle Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon. The Bengals dropped the doubles point but battled in singles play before falling to the Broncos.
"We were close in all of the matches, but we just couldn't quite convert for the win," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "Our lack of experience got us today. We are still improving and learning, and we are excited for Portland State in about two weeks."
Boise State (5-1) overpowered Idaho State (2-2) in doubles play with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 doubles position and a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles position to take the doubles point.
Facing a 1-0 match deficit heading into singles play, the Bengals rallied to force three sets at two different positions.
Huibre-Mare Botes won her first set at the No. 2 singles position against Lilian Poling 6-2, but Poling responded to win the second set 6-3 and force a third. A 6-1 decision in the third set gave Poling the singles victory. ISU's
Melissa Coburn also forced three sets; Coburn fell 6-3 in the first set but battled to a 7-5 win in the second set to force a third. Coburn fell 10-3 in the third set to give BSU's Nancy Menjivar the win.
ISU returns to play against Portland State on Thursday, March 2 in Pocatello, Idaho at the tennis courts at Reed Gym.
