SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Idaho State women's tennis team battled defending Big Sky Conference champions Sacramento State before falling 4-3 at the Sacramento State Courts in Sacramento, Calif.
"We had some major adversity to overcome," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "Our players suffered cramping and a few calls were reversed that made a big difference for us in the match. Our girls keep improving and will continue to battle."
Idaho State (4-7, 3-2 BSC) dropped the doubles point to start the match as Sacramento State (6-9, 4-2 BSC) claimed two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point early. ISU earned the first win in doubles play as
Huibre-Mare Botes and
Louise-Mare Botes bested Louisa Brunetti and Andie Mouzes 6-3 at the No. 1 doubles position, but the Hornets closed out doubles play with two-straight wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 doubles positions.
In singles play, Idaho State split matches with Sacramento State.
Angela Walker picked up ISU's first singles win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brunetti at the No. 6 singles position, while both
Louise-Mare Botes and
Huibre-Mare Botes also posted wins. Louise-Mare won in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 singles position and Huibre-Mare followed wuit with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mouzes at the No. 2 singles position. The final two matches were decided by tiebreakers, each in the final set. Sac State's Sofia Wicker defeated Idaho State's
Melissa Coburn 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at the No. 4 singles position while
Megan Poe fell in a three-set battle at the No. 5 singles position, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0).
Idaho State continues play on the road with a 4 p.m. match at Northern Arizona on Tuesday, March 21.
