POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team shut down visiting Portland State 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the tennis courts at Reed Gym. The Bengals earned the doubles point early and nearly swept singles play for the win.
"That was solid tennis today from everyone," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "Our doubles play started a bit slow, but we rallied to win the doubles point. That set the tone for us for singles play."
Idaho State (3-2, 2-0 BSC) started doubles with two-straight wins as
Megan Poe and
Melissa Coburn bested Sally Partington and Taylor Rees 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Madison Fenske followed that with a 6-4 win over PSU's Sabina-Elena Preda and Georgia Dobell at the No. 3 doubles position to earn the doubles point.
In singles play,
Huibre-Mare Botes started things off for the Bengals with a two-set victory (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 2 singles position. Portland State claimed the next singles victory at the No. 4 position as Coburn fell to PSU's Partington 6-4, 6-3, but ISU rattled off four-straight victories to dominate singles play and earn the win, 6-1.
The Bengals are back in action March 3 in Colorado Springs, Colo. in a neutral-site match against UMKC at Air Force. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. MST.
