POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's basketball team heads to Cedar City, Utah to take on the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah on its first stop of a two-game road trip. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4 at the America First Event Center.
BENGALS PREVIEW
· Idaho State's school-record tying start (8-3) and three-game win streak came to a halt Saturday as the Bengals were bested by Weber State 76-70 at Reed Gym to open conference play. It was the first time in two seasons that ISU has dropped its conference opener; during the 2015-16 season ISU fell at Weber State 61-46 to open Big Sky play.
· Through 12 games, the Bengals are averaging 71.1 points per game shooting a conference-best 44.1 percent from the floor and a conference-best 40.6 percent from three. ISU averages 42.3 rebounds per game with a +9.9 rebounding margin to go along with 7.3 steals per game and 15.2 assists per game. The Bengals also boast a conference-best +10.3 scoring margin.
· Idaho State is led in scoring by Blair at 14.0 points per game. Two other Bengals average at least 10 points:
Grace Kenyon, 10.8 and
Saylair Grandon at 10.3.
Sai Tapasa and Estefania Ors are close behind at 9.9 and 9.5 per game respectively.
· Tapasa leads the rebounding effort with a 7.3 per game average while Kenyon averages 6.7 per contest.
· Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski is in his 10th season with the program and carries a 158-135 overall record (.539) and has led the team to two postseason tournament appearances: one NCAA tournament berth and one WNIT tournament appearance.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH
· Southern Utah is 1-12 on the season with its lone win coming with a 70-67 victory over Utah State at home. Currently, the T-Birds are on a nine-game losing streak. SUU opened conference play with a 91-71 loss at Montana State followed by an 81-71 loss at Montana.
· Through 13 games, Southern Utah averages 61.5 points per contest shooting 35.4 percent from the floor. The Thunderbirds average 36.9 rebounds per contest to go along with 13.3 assists and 12.5 steals per contest to lead the Big Sky.
· Two players average double-figures for the T-Birds, led by Breanu Reid with 12.2 points per game while Whitney Johnson adds 10.3 per contest. Johnson also leads the T-Birds in rebounding, averaging 6.3 per game.
· Southern Utah is led by Head Coach Chris Boettcher who is in his fourth year at the helm of the program.
· SERIES REVIEW: Idaho State leads the series 35-12 including a 13-8 advantage in Cedar City. In the last meeting, ISU outlasted the T-Birds 71-68 in overtime in Cedar City.
