Soccer Hosts Montana and Northern Colorado

POCATELLO, Idaho –
Idaho State returns to Davis Field for Big Sky matchups against Montana and Northern Colorado this week. The Bengals host Montana at 4 p.m. Friday and Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.  

Friday's contest against the Grizzlies falls on World Teacher's Day. All teachers with a valid school ID will receive free admission and their family members will receive $3 admission.

The Idaho State Journal will be placing buy one, get one free ticket vouchers in its paper for Sunday's contest against Northern Colorado.

The Oct. 5 event is also soccer's teal and purple game. ISU student-athletes will don teal and purple ribbons to #SetTheExpectation that sexual assault and physical violence are never okay.

Idaho State
The Bengals dropped both games on the road last week against Sacramento State and Portland State.

Freshman Delaney Johnston scored Idaho State's only goal on a penalty kick against the Vikings to regain the team lead in goals and points. She has three goals on the season and six points.

Makena Bambei and Brooke Kortekaas lead the team in shots with 25 and 22 respectively. Bambei leads the team in shots on goal with 12 and Kortekaas has 11.

Laule'a Akana-Phillips is still the team's leader in saves (48), minutes in goal (766) and shutouts (1), but Katie Hogarth played the entire game against PSU and subbed in against Sacramento State. Hogarth averages 3.39 goals against and has made 11 saves in 239 minutes of play.  

Idaho State is 2-9 overall with a 1-3 Big Sky Conference record. They average 1.00 goal, 13.6 shots, 4.36 corner kicks and 5.55 saves per game. Opponents have combined for 3.36 goals, 20.5 shots and 6.45 corner kicks per game against the Bengals.

Scouting Montana
Montana carries a 1-6-4 overall record. They are 0-1-2 in Big Sky play after tying Eastern Washington 0-0 and Idaho 1-1 last week. Montana has not won a game on the road this season with an 0-3-1 away record.

The Griz have five goals for the season with Kennedy Yost accounting for two, one via penalty kick, and one assist. Yost is the only player with more than 10 shots on goal with 16.

Claire Howard has played 1,084 minutes in goal with 14 goals allowed and 50 saves in 11 games. The netminder has a .781 save percentage and has kept her goal clean in four games.

UM has collected 0.45 goals, 12.91 shots, 4.55 corner kicks and 4.64 saves per game. They have allowed 1.27 goals, 13.73 shots and 3.91 corner kicks per game to opponents.

Chris Citowicki is in his first season as head coach of the Grizzlies.

The Bengals are 8-12-3 against Montana with a 4-3-1 record at home. ISU shutout UM 1-0 at Davis Field in 2017.

Scouting Northern Colorado
The Bears are 7-5 with a 3-0 mark in conference play. They defeated Montana (2-1), shutout Idaho (3-0) and topped Eastern Washington (3-1) to begin conference play.   

Maddie Roberts, Lexi Pulley and Mariel Gutierrez have combined for 13 of UNC's 21 goals. The trio also has nine of the Bears' 15 assists.

Pulley and Lindsi Jennings, both freshman, won the Big Sky Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards. Pulley had two goals and Jennings guided the defense as it limited Idaho and Eastern Washington to 11 shots and one goal. Both players scored a game-winning goal last week.

Taylor Washington has played all but one half in goal for Northern Colorado. She has allowed 16 goals and made 44 saves for a .733 save percentage and has two shutouts on the season.

The Bears average 1.75 goals, 14.3 shots, 5.25 corner kicks and 3.75 saves per game while allowing 1.50 goals, 8.9 shots and 4.0 corner kicks per game to opponents.

Head Coach Tim Barrera is in his 19th season at the helm of UNC. In 24 years as a head coach, he has tallied a 230-196-36 overall record.

Idaho State holds the edge over Northern Colorado with a 7-6-1 record, including a 3-2-1 record when hosting the Bears. ISU crushed UNC 6-2 the last time they played in Pocatello and lost a double-overtime thriller 2-1 on the road in 2017.
