POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team won its third straight game, beating Utah State 9-7 on Wednesday afternoon in Logan, Utah.
The Bengals had 11 hits and
Mariah Mulcahy earned the win, pitching seven innings, allowing nine hits, three walks and she tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.
Haley Harrison was 2-3 with one RBI and three runs scored.
Emma Bordenkecher was 3-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
Kelsey Breer had one home run and two RBIs.
Shayna Dahlen was 2-2 and scored one run while
Genesis Zamora also had two hits, one RBI and scored run.
"We got out of the gate fast and scored four runs in the first inning and put Utah State on its heels," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We played relaxed, confident and we got a solid pitching performance from Mariah. As a team we hit the ball well and put pressure on Utah State the entire game. It was a very solid and complete game heading into our three games vs. Sac State this weekend."
The Bengals led the entire game and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Aubrey Creekmore led off the first inning by reaching base on an error and Harrison followed with a single to left field. Then with one out Bordenkecher smacked a two RBI single to right field and later in the inning Breer hit her two-run home run.
Utah State scored two runs in the third inning to cut the Bengal lead to 4-2 but ISU rallied with a four run fourth inning to lead 8-2.
Dahlen led off the inning with a single to center field and
Cassidy FitzGerald followed with a single to right. Zamora then drove in the first run of the inning on a double to left and later in the inning Harrison had an RBI on a single to left.
Ashlyn Ames had a sacrifice RBI and Bordenkecher platted the final run on a single up the middle.
Utah State scored a run in the fifth inning and ISU added a run in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead.
The Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth but ISU held off the rally to earn the win.
Idaho State returns to Big Sky Conference play on Friday and Saturday with a three-game series vs. Sacramento State. ISU plays a double header on Friday, April 13 beginning at 2 p.m. and then plays one game on April 14 at 1 p.m.
