POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State senior men's basketball player
Erik Nakken was awarded a $7,500 post graduate scholarship by the NCAA for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school. Nakken graduated from Idaho State this spring with a 3.99 GPA with a double major in German and biomedical science.
He is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-Region winner and he earned academic all-conference all four years during his time in Pocatello. This past year he served as the SAAC Co-President and he was elected team captain for his final year on the basketball court.
Nakken scored in the 98
th percentile on the M-CAT exam and in the 99
th percentile on the ACS standardized organic chemistry exam. Nakken will attend Washington University in St. Louis this upcoming year with a focus in either orthopaedic surgery or dermatology.
The scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The NCAA only awards up to 174 of these each year .
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship nomination is submitted by the faculty athletics representative (FAR) or by a FAR designee. It is the responsibility of the FAR or FAR designee to ensure all sections of the nomination are submitted to the NCAA national office not later than the corresponding sport season deadlines.
