POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State soccer concludes its nonconference schedule with matches against South Dakota State and Boise State this week. The Bengals host the Jackrabbits at Davis Field Thursday at 4 p.m. and travel to Boise, Idaho to play the Broncos at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Idaho State's home game against South Dakota State is Idaho State Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. All ISU faculty and staff will have free admission and their family members receive $3 admission.
Last Time Out
Idaho State secured its first victory of the season against Utah State last Saturday, Sept. 8. The Bengals won 5-4 in the second period of overtime.
Five Bengals scored a goal for ISU including
Meaghan Bare,
Brooke Kortekaas,
Delaney Johnston,
Corinne Sanderson and
Rachel Brownell. It was the first goal of the season for every player except Johnston, who has scored twice in three games and leads ISU in points with four. Kortekaas,
Paige Smith and
Tristen Spooner all recorded assists in the match.
Laule'a Akana-Phillips played the entire match and recorded 14 saves. She faced 32 shots which is the second-most in program history. Her 14 saves rank third all-time on the ISU single-match records list.
Trends
Akana-Phillips has faced double-digit shots in all three of her complete games. She has faced 30-plus shots in two-consecutive games with BYU collecting 31 and Utah State collecting 32.
Bare broke the streak of freshmen goals, becoming the first non-freshman to score. The rookie class still leads in points and goals with six and three respectively. Sophomores rank second in points with five, juniors rank third in points with three and seniors rank fourth in points with two.
The Bengals are 1-0 when they score the first goal of a match and 0-4 when their opponent strikes first.
Johnston is the only player with multiple goals on the season after scoring against Wyoming and Utah State.
Idaho State ranks No. 23 in the nation in saves per game with 6.80. Individually, Akana-Phillips ranks 39th in the same category with 5.80 saves per game.
Scouting South Dakota State
The Jackrabbits enter the match with a 4-4 overall record. They are 4-2 at home, but winless on the road in two games so far. They were shutout by Arizona State 2-0 Monday night.
Leah Manuleleua and Karlee Manding both have three goals on the season for South Dakota State, though Manuleleua has played just five games. The junior forward also has an assist and leads the team in points with seven. In all, seven players have scored at least one goal and 11 players have at least one point.
Maggie Smither has spent most of the season in goal for the Jackrabbits. The junior keeper has allowed six goals while collecting 29 saves for a 0.829 save percentage. She was also the Summit League's Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. Nationally, Smither is No. 34 in shutouts (3) and No. 44 in goalie minutes played (685).
Brock Thompson heads the coaching staff for his second year. In his first year, SDSU finished 7-0 in league play with an 11-5-3 overall record. He was named the Summit League Coach of the Year in 2017.
Thursday's game will be the first regular-season matchup between these two programs.
Scouting Boise State
The Broncos are 5-2 this season and have already collected three wins against Big Sky teams. BSU defeated Idaho 2-1 to open the season and posted shutouts against Eastern Washington and Southern Utah.
Raimee Sherle has been a force for Boise State with eight goals in seven games. The junior forward secured a 3-2 win for the Broncos against New Mexico State with a hat trick. McKenna Kynett and and Allegra Weeks are the only other goal scorers for BSU.
Nationally, Sherle is No. 1 in goals per game (1.14), No. 1 in game winning goals (4), No. 8 in points per game (2.29), No. 12 in shots per game (4.71), No. 23 in shots on goal per game (2.29), No. 3 in goals (8) and No. 7 in total points (16).
Tara Fisher leads the BSU goalkeepers with 526 minutes and a 5-2 record. She has collected 30 saves this season and has allowed eight goals on 98 shots faced. She also ranks No. 34 in the nation for shutouts with three.
Jim Thomas enters his sixth year with Boise State. He led the team to a 13-6-3 record in 2017.
The Bengals and Broncos have met 20 times. Idaho State holds an 8-10-2 record against Boise State, but is 5-2-1 against the Broncos at Davis Field. The two teams played in Pocatello last season and BSU won 1-0.
