BERKELEY, Calif.- The Idaho State football team lost 45-23 to Cal on Saturday in front of a crowd of 37,104 at Memorial Stadium. The 23 points scored by the Bengals was the most scored against a Power 5 teams since the 2005 team scored 29 in a loss to Kentucky.
Idaho State finished with 319 total yards and Cal had 482. The 45 points scored by Cal is the third fewest ISU has given up against a Power 5 team. Oregon State scored 37 in 2016 and Kentucky scored 41 in 2005. The Bengals have played 12 Power 5 teams since 2005.
Tanner Gueller was 15-23 with one interception, one touchdown and 179 yards.
Mitch Gueller caught six passes for 156 yards and one touchdown.
James Madison carried the ball 19 times for 63 yards and one touchdown and
Ty Flanagan had 11 carries for 50 yards and one touchdown.
Cal led 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 with 11:57 left in the second quarter. The Bengals got on the scoreboard less than two minutes later when a 63-yard reception by
Mitch Gueller set up a
Campbell Sheidow 23-yard field goal with 10:13 left.
The Bears led 28-3 at halftime thanks to an 89-yard kickoff return by Ashtyn Davis following the Bengal field goal.
On Cal's first possession of the third quarter
Koby Lowe picked off a pass and returned it 34 yards to the Cal 26 yard line. Flanagan capped off a four play 26-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to cut the Cal lead to 28-9. The touchdown was the first offensive touchdown the Bears defense had given up in the first three quarters of a game this year.
The Bears then rattled off 17 straight points to lead 45-9 with 8:04 left in the game.
The Bengals scored the final 14 points when
Mitch Gueller caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Tanner with 5:23 left and Madison scored on a one-yard run with 1:26 remaining to make the score 45-23.
Idaho State opens Big Sky play on Saturday, Sept. 22 at North Dakota. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. mountain time.
