Women's Basketball Goes to Overtime in Tempe

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's basketball team fell 74-69 in overtime to Arizona State on Sunday afternoon.

Idaho State put on a show in Tempe, shooting 43 percent (26-61) from the field and 47 percent (8-17) from three-point range. The Bengal defense held the Sun Devils to 17 percent from three (2-12) and scored 25 points off of 25 ASU turnovers. ISU also produced a season-high six blocks and 13 steals. 

"I thought we shot great," said Head Coach Seton Sobolewski. "They showed great heart and toughness against a team that knows how to be tough."

Dora Goles scored a career-high 26 points. She was 10-18 from the field and made a career-tying 5-7 from beyond the three-point arc. She also tallied four boards, one block, and four steals. The game marked her second-consecutive game breaking her career-high in points.

Callie Bourne and Diaba Konate each scored 13 points. Bourne was 5-9 from the floor and 3-4 from three. Konate hit a career-high 13 points, going 7-8 from the free-throw line.

"I'm extremely proud of our effort," Sobolewski said. "We disrupted a lot of things and caused 25 turnovers. We made a lot of great plays."

The Bengals had a four-point lead over the Sun Devils three times throughout the first quarter before ASU took a 18-17 lead at the end of the quarter.

Konate tied her previous career-high eight points in the first quarter, going a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.

Goles scored 10 points in the second quarter to give ISU a 35-29 lead heading into halftime. The redshirt junior nailed three 3's in a row, one coming from a deep shot-clock beater. She finished the half going 4-7 from the field, 3-3 from three, and produced three boards and three steals.

Idaho State out-shot and out-rebounded ASU in the first half, shooting 46 percent (12-26) from the field and going 4-4 from beyond the three-point arc against the Sun Devil's 40 percent (10-25) from the field and 0-5 from three. ISU recorded 17 first-half rebounds against ASU's 15.

The Sun Devils went on a 17-4 run in the third to take back the lead. Konate, Bourne, Ellie Smith, and Delaney Moore each put up two points. The Sun Devil lead was cut to 46-63 after Konate hit a third-quarter buzzer beater layup.

Goles and Bourne dominated the fourth quarter producing a combined 15 points. Goles hit an early three followed by a two-pointer by Bourne to tie the game at 48. Goles nailed a jumper with less than two minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 56 before ASU would jump ahead, 59-56, with a deep three.

With 14 seconds left, Bourne hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter off of a steal of by Estefania Ors. The shot tied the game at 59 and sent the Bengals into their first overtime game of the season.  

Arizona State opened the extra period on an 11-0 run to lead 70-59 with 1:43 remaining. Idaho State cut the ASU lead to 72-67 after Goles fifth 3-pointer with 22 seconds left. She later made a layup with two seconds remaining in overtime, making the score 74-69

ISU returns home on Monday, Dec. 16, to host California Baptist at 5 p.m. (MST) in Reed Gym. Idaho State men's basketball hosts UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. (MST) following the women's game.
