POCATELLO, Idaho – Multiple school records were broken by Idaho State track and field athletes at the Nike/Jackson's Indoor Invitational in Boise, Idaho on Friday.
"It was one of the most exciting meets of the year to watch," said Head Coach Hillary Merkley.
For the second week in a row, Treyshon Malone set a new all-time ISU record. In the preliminaries of the 200m dash, Malone ran the event in 21.30 seconds. This is the fastest mark since Idaho State Olympian Carl Lawson ran a 21.34 in 1973. Malone also ran the second fastest time in school history in the 60m dash with a time of 6.83 seconds.
Tanner Conner showed his strength in the 60 hurdles running an 8.00. This mark breaks a 32-year-old record set in 1987 by ISU athlete Darin Jernigan.
In the distance events, Rachel McGovern won the 5000m with a time of 17:43.97. This mark earns her the No. 8 all-time fastest mark in ISU history and ranks her 13th in the Big Sky.
Joe Simmons finished the sweep of the 5000m race for ISU winning with a time of 14:36.59 netting him the fourth fastest 5000 in Idaho State History. This mark also ranks him No. 8 in the conference.
"Early on our team wasn't ranked very well in the conference," Merkley said. "To be able to break records shows we have really strong individuals. Our program hasn't been a slouch program. There were some pretty solid performers who set records here at ISU in the past. To have three of those guys on our team right now is pretty impressive. I think they encourage each other and they work well together and help us to be better. They are competing with each other but also competing for the team."
In the pole vault, Sierra Kiser set a personal best height of 3.75m (12' 3.5"). She now sits at No. 4 in the Big Sky after her performance.
Hannah Bartz won the long jump with a distance of 5.74m (18' 10") which moves her into 8th place in the conference.
In the throws, Trevor Jensen won the weight throw and Madison Cicerski took third-place for her highest finish of the season.
"You feed off the momentum," Merkley said. "It was neat to sit in the crowd and have everybody there and watch today. It gets people excited about watching new things unfold and you want to be a part of it. We see that our team is getting better and they want to be better too."
The meet continues Saturday Feb. 2 starting at 9:35 a.m.
