Scouting Montana
Two years of injuries have led Montana to have one of the older teams in the Big Sky with six redshirts including three seniors (two redshirts) and three juniors (two redshirts). The projected starters are Mckenzie Johnston, Emma Stockholm, Sophia Stiles, Madi Schoening, and Abby Anderson. Gabbi Harrington has also seen 15 starts for Montana.
Johnston, who was voted pre-season all-conference, leads the Lady Griz averaging 12.2 points per game. She has a team-high .375 average from beyond the three-point arc while also leading the team in free-throws made (39), rebounds (85 - 5.3 pg), assists (79 - 4.9 pg), and steals (22 - 1.4 pg). She ranks third in Big Sky conference play in assists.
Stockholm follows Johnston with 11 points per game, shooting .451 from the floor and .829 from the free-throw line. Stiles is UM's best guard while producing 1.4 steals per game and 2.3 assists per game.
Schoening is shooting .310 from field-goal range while Anderson has a team-high .470 field-goal percentage and leads the team with 23 blocks. She also has a team second-best 37 free-throws made.
UM, who was picked fifth in the coaches' pre-season poll and seventh by the media, has tallied a 9-7 record so far in the 2019-20 season and is 4-3 in the Big Sky. They struggle to defend the three-point shot, allowing .370 by their opponents with six teams hitting ten or more three balls against them. However, they protect the basketball well, sitting No. 24 in the nation in turnover to assist ratio (1.22).
Overall, the team is producing 68.2 points per game while shooting 381-937 (.407) from the field and 83-250 (.332) from three. Montana leads the Big Sky in assists (254 - 15.9 per game) and defensive rebound percentage (.725). With eight players shooting 70 percent or better from the free-throw line, the Lady Griz rank second in the BSC in free-throw percentage (.759) and second behind ISU in rebounding defense (.342).
The Lady Grizzlies finished their 2018-19 season with an 14-16 overall record and a 9-11 conference finish. They ended their season falling 64-56 to Southern Utah in the first-round of the Big Sky tournament. The team is led by fourth-year Head Coach Shannon Schweyen who worked as an assistant coach for 24 years prior to being named head coach. Montana went 531-203 with Schweyen as an assistant coach while winning 14 Big Sky Conference regular-season titles and advancing to 13 NCAA Tournaments. As a head coach, Schweyen has a three-year record of 35-56.
Both teams walked away with a victory in last season's match-ups. The last meeting ended in a 60-59 Montana victory on Feb. 16, 2019, in Missoula. ISU trailed 22-10 after a quarter then held UM to only two points in the second period to get back into the game. Montana was 19-30 from the free-throw line while ISU was only 7-13.
Montana leads the all-time series, 72-12, winning six of the last ten games. Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski is 6-18 in his career vs. Montana with those six wins representing half of the total number of ISU program wins over the Lady Griz.
