Women's Basketball Preview: Montana State

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's basketball heads to Bozeman, Mont. to face Montana State on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. following a 67-53 victory over Montana on Thursday night. 

The game will feature live stats, video, and audio brought to you by Mark Liptak and KISU 91.1. The pregame show will begin approximately 20 minutes before game time. 

Scouting Montana State
The Bobcats have a veteran roster including six upperclassmen, five of which are seniors, and three DI transfers from North Dakota, Pepperdine, and Seton Hall. The projected starters are Fallyn Freije, Darian White, Madeline Smith, Martha Kuderer, and Oliana Squires.

Freije, who was voted pre-season Big Sky Conference MVP, leads the Bobcats averaging 12.6 points per game. She has a .402 average from field-goal range while leading the team in rebounds with 7.6 per game, ranking her fifth in the Big Sky in boards. 

White follows Freije with 11.4 points per game, shooting .426 from the floor and team-best .857 from the free-throw line. She also leads the team in assists (54 - 3.2 pg) and steals (43 - 2.5 per game). She sits second in the BSC in steals and first in free-throw percentage.

Smith is shooting a team-high .538 from field-goal range while leading the team in blocked shots (21 - 1.2 pg) and offensive boards (42 - 2.5 pg). Kuderer leads the team with a .455 three-point field goal percentage while shooting .488 from field-goal range.

Squires, who was selected first team all-conference last season,  is .360 from the floor and .800 from the free-throw line to average 11.2 points per game. She leads the Bobcats in three-point attempts with 80.

MSU, who was picked first in both the coaches' pre-season poll and by the media, has tallied a 11-6 record so far in the 2019-20 season and is 7-1 in the Big Sky with a 69-68 loss to Idaho. 

Overall, the team is producing 73.9 points per game while shooting 457-1068 (.428) from the field and 103-313 (.329) from three. MSU leads the conference in rebounding offense (725 - 42.65 pg) is second in the conference in field-goal defense (.364) and steals (177 - 10.41 pg).

The Bobcats finished their 2018-19 season with an 16-15 overall record and a 11-9 conference finish. They ended their season falling 68-56 to Portland State in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky tournament. The team is led by 15-year Head Coach Tricia Binford who is MSU's longest tenured coach as well as its winningest coach in program history. Binford has recorded a winning season in 12 of her 14 completed seasons.Montana State had a stretch of 31 consecutive home court wins (Dec. 2015-Jan. 2018) that ranked second only to UConn at the time.

ISU defeated MSU in both of last season's match-ups. The last meeting ended in a 62-49  Bengal victory on Feb. 14, 2019, in Bozeman. ISU was 7-16 from three-point range which combated the Bobcats 16-23 from the free-throw line.

MSU leads the all-time series, 45-37. ISU has won six of the last ten games with MSU winning three of the last five. Head Coach Seton Sobolewski is 13-9 in his career vs. Montana State. .

ISU leads the Big Sky in field-goal percentage (.433) and is second in the three-point percentage (.362) while finishing third in steals (155 - 9.12 per game), blocked shots (63 - 3.7 per game), assists (263- 15.5 per game), scoring defense (62.53 ppg), and field-goal percentage defense (.383).

Callie Bourne is sixth in the BSC in rebounds with 125 for an average of 7.4 per game and third in defensive boards with 99. Dora Goles is third in steals with 41, averaging 2.4 per game and fifth in 3-pointers made with 37. Ellie Smith is fourth in blocked shots with 31.

Trends
Bourne has had double-digit points the last six games and has reached double-digit points in all but four games this season. Konate follows with double-digits in four conference games. 

The Bengals have out-rebounded their opponents in all but four of their 17 games so far this season.

Recap: Montana
ISU defeated Montana 67-53 on Thursday night in Missoula, Mont. The game marks just the fourth time in program history that ISU has defeated Montana on the road. Idaho State out-shot UM 47 percent to 33 percent from the floor. ISU scored 34 points in the paint after adjusting to Montana holding them to just 24 percent from three. The Bengals also out-rebounded Montana 41-33. Montana Oltrogge led the Bengals with 18 points, scoring 11 in the second half. Diaba Konate followed with 15 points and Callie Bourne recorded her sixth-consecutive double-figure game with 14. points. Ellie Smith recorded a career-tying nine boards, a career-high four assists, and two blocks. Bourne and Konate also grabbed seven boards each. Dora Goles had a career-high five steals.
