POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's basketball team fell 72-65 in overtime to Southern Utah on Thursday night in Cedar City.
Southern Utah out-shot Idaho State 22-57 to 25-70 from the floor and 9-17 to 6-21 from three. ISU out-rebounded SUU 37-33 and had five Bengals score in the double digits.
Ellie Smith led with 12 points and a career-high nine boards.
Diaba Konate followed with 11 points and
Callie Bourne,
Dora Goles, and
Tomekia Whitman all added 10. ISU also recorded 12 steals, led by Konate with a career-high five steals.
"I thought we put ourselves in a good position to win this game," said Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski. "We had really good looks late in the 4th quarter and overtime, but the shots didn't fall."
The Bengals ended the first quarter up 8-6, scoring all of their points in the paint. Smith led with four points.
The Thunderbirds would take their first lead at 12-10 after back to back three's early in the second quarter.
Montana Oltrogge helped put ISU ahead, 32-28, at the end of the first half after going 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from three in the second quarter. Idaho State out-rebounded Southern Utah in the first half, 18-11, with eight coming from offensive boards led by Smith with four. Smith and Oltrogge each ended the half with a team-high eight points. Konate would add seven and two steals.
Idaho State would end the third in a 48-40 lead after going 6-14 from the floor and holding the Thunderbirds to 1-10 from field-goal range. SUU scored nine points off of free-throws.
ISU took a game high 12-point lead, 55-43, after a three from Goles and two made free-throws from Bourne in the fourth quarter. The Thunderbirds would tie it up at 58 with just 1:21 minutes left in the game after going on a 10-0 run and going 4-4 from beyond the three-point arc to take the game into overtime. The Bengals shot 3-14 from field-goal range in the fourth.
Bourne sunk a deep-three to put the Bengals ahead 63-61 in overtime. SUU would go ahead 65-63 with two minutes left and would take its momentum to go on a 11-2 run to finish the game in a 72-65 victory.
The Bengals return home to host Northern Arizona on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. (MST).
