Men's Tennis Opens ISU Invitational Strong

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State men's tennis team opened their home invitational with each player earning a win on the first day of play. 

"I think we had a much improved performance as a team today," said Head Coach Alexander Free. "We're still working with the guys to maintain the level of intensity and focus that is required every point of the match in order to be successful but this is a big step forward for our team in our fall season."

In doubles play, Andreas Kramer and Ege Cankus started the day off with a 6-1 win over a Montana and Montana State combined doubles pair. 

In singles play, Kramer won his first round match in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 over Sam Baldwin from Montana. He then beat Brigham Andrus 6-1, 7-6(3) from BYU to secure his spot in the semi finals of the Orange Draw. 

Patrick Kristensen defeated Montana's Milo Benn 6-3, 6-0 in his first round match. Kristensen then played a tight three set match in his next round against Alex Lin from BYU but came out on top with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Kristensen's two wins on the day also earned him a spot in the semi finals of the Orange Draw. 

Cankus defeated Matheus Leite from BYU 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-1 in round one of the Orange draw. Cankus then lost in a tough battle to University of Utah's Mathias Gavelin 6-3, 7-5. 

Patrik Trhac defeated University of Utah's Jayson Blando 6-4, 6-1 in round one of singles. In the second round, Trhac had to pull out of the match due to injury against Lawrence Sciglitano from Montana. 

Aleksander Petrovic lost his first match of the day to University of Utah's Mathias Gavelin. He then defeated BYU's Matheus Leite in a tough three set battle that ended in a two point difference for the match 6-7(4), 7-5, 11-9 in the consolation of the Orange Draw. 

Hiroki Fujita lost his first round match to Brigham Andrus 7-5, 6-4 but came out on top of Sam Baldwin from Montana by two points in the consolations of the Orange draw 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-8. 

Wikus Robbertse won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 over Manuel Montiero from Montana State in the first round of the White Draw. Zachary Matuszak also advanced in the White Draw after winning his first rounf match over Josh Watkins from Montana 6-0, 6-2. 

The Bengals return to action tomorrow, October 2 at the Capell Park tennis courts. Doubles play beings at 10 a.m followed by singles play.
