Bengals Head to Mexico Take On the 2021 Cancun Challenge

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State women's basketball heads south of the border this week to Cancun, Mexico to take on the 2021 Cancun Challenge.

 "We have two more tough opponents this week with Toledo and Central Florida," said Head Coach Seton Sobolewski. "It's going to take a complete team effort on the defensive and offensive end to compete with such quality opponents."

The Bengals will face off against The Toledo Rockets and the University of Central Florida Knights. This will be the first time in program history the Bengals have played either team.

Game one against Toledo is set for Thanksgiving Day and tip is scheduled for 4:30 PM MT.  Game two against UCF is set for Friday, Nov. 26 at 4:30 PM MT.

Live Stats will be provided for both games. There will be no Radio Broadcast of the games due to scheduling constraints with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Video of the games will be available on FloSports. FloSports is a paid subscription service so any Bengal fans wishing to watch the women's games will have to sign up for a subscription.

On the Road Again

The Bengals are in the middle of a long road trip. This week's games mark the third and fourth of a six game road trip for the Orange and Black.

Bengal Bites

In the game against Park on 11/13/21, Montana Oltrogge passed 500 career points.

The 109-56 win over park was the 2nd highest scoring game in Bengal history. (first place was a 113-107 win against Weber State in the Big Sky Tournament.)

The 53-point differential was the fourth highest in program history.

The Bengals 34 assists were one shy of the overall ISU record (35 vs NAU on 2-15-1992)

In the game against Missouri, Ellie Smith Passed Grace Kenyon for 9th all-time in career blocks (105 total)

The 2020-21, 22-4 final season record was an .846-win percentage. That is the best single season mark in program history breaking the old record of .833 set by the 25-5, 2000-2001 club. It was the fourth NCAA appearance by the ISU woman since the start of the 2000-2001 season. They have also made five WNIT appearances in that time.

Since the Big Sky moved the post season tournament to a neutral site starting in the 2015-2016 season, ISU is now 12-5.

Overall ISU is now 16-11 in the Big Sky Conference post season tournament under Seton.

*7-5 in quarter final games

*4-4 in semifinal games

At 22-4 ISU had themselves another winning season. It was the ninth time in 13 years under Seton they've done this. They've also had a .500 year. So, the totals are: Nine winning seasons…three losing ones and a .500 campaign.

AND they also guaranteed themselves a winning season in conference play at 18-2. It was the 10th time in 13 years under Seton this has happened.

The 22 wins marked the seventh time in program history they have accomplished this (20+). It has happened under Seton as head coach four times, and three times in the last four years. They finished the season 11-0 at home. It was only the second time in program history a club went undefeated at home for the year. The 2000-2001 team went 15-0 counting the two games in the post season tournament played in Pocatello.

Ellie Smith is now tied with Grace Kenyon in eighth place all-time in blocked shots with 105. Next up is Natalie Doma who played from 2004-2008. She blocked 110 shots.  

Estefie Ors has scored 1,391 points, she is now sixth all-time. Next up, fifth on the list, is Grace Kenyon with 1,471 points. Ors is now in ninth place all-time in made field goals with 480. Next up with 486 field goals is Lindsey Reed who played from 2010-2014. She now has 206 made three-point shots in her career the best ever for the program. She needs two rebounds for 500 in her career which would make her the 15th player in ISU WBB history with at least 1,000 points and at least 500 rebounds. Ors also needs 21 assists to give her 300 which would tie her for 10th place all-time with Jennifer Griffin who played from 1998-2002.

Estefie has played in 129 games for ISU. That is the all-time program record.

Dora Goles is now in fifth place with 142 made three-point shots passing Chelsea Pickering with 138. She played from 2007-2012. Fourth on the list is Chris Urbanski who made 172 three-pointers in her career which spanned from 1997 through 2001. She needs 65 points for 1,000 in her career. Goles is now in 11th place all-time in made field goals with 453. Next up with 464 field goals is Nancy Imhoff who played from 1985-1989. She needs eight steals to tie for 10th place all-time at 142 with Stacey Nelson who played from 1993-1997 and Grace Kenyon who played from 2014-2019.

Montana Oltrogge needs five more made three-point shots for 100 in her career.

Mid-Major Poll

The Bengals are ranked 13th in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll.

Currently, the Bengals only have one opponent ranked on the poll, Gonzaga at No. 7

Numbers to Watch

2 – Number of Rebounds Estefania Ors needs to become the 15th Bengal all-time with over 1000 points and 500 rebounds

65 – Number of Points Dora Goles needs to become the 21st member of the ISU 1,000 Point club.

9 – Points needed for Estefania Ors to hit 1400 career points.

3.0 – Number of steals per game Tomekia Whitman is averaging putting her at 1st place in the conference.

Quick Scout and History – Toledo Rockets

·       The Rockets are 2-1 so far this season with wins against Oakland and Wright State (84-72, 73-56).

·       Their lone loss came on Nov. 17, a 69-60 loss at Dayton.

·       The Rockets are averaging 72.3 points per game and have held opponents to 65.7 ppg. Toledo scored a season high 84 points in their win vs Oakland.

·       As a team, the Rockets are 81-192 from the field for a 44.2 FGM. They are also shooting 30 percent from the three-point line on 18-of-60 shooting.

·       #5 Quinesha Lockett is leading the team offensively with 68 points scored through the first three games, an aver­age of 22.7 ppg.

·       #34 Jessica Cook is also averaging double-digit scoring with 13.7 ppg.

·       The Rockets are averaging 12 turnovers per game while forcing opponents into 15 per game. In their first two games, the Rockets had eight and seven steals, while Dayton held them to only one steal.

 

This will be the first meeting of the two teams in program history.

Quick Scout and History – UCF Knights

·       The UCF Knights are 3-1 on the season with wins against Duquesne (68-39), Virginia (59-38) and Belmont (57-45).

·       Their lone loss came at Tennessee, a 49-41 loss on Nov. 12.

·       The Knights are averaging 56.3 ppg while holding opponents to 42.8 ppg. UCF scored its season high against Duquesne, 68 points.

·       As a team the knights are 81-of-218, 37.2 percent from the field. From behind the three-point line, the Knights are 18-of-57, 31.6 percent.

·       The Knights are shooting lights out from the free-throw line. Through four games they have shot 45-of-53 from the line for 84.9 percent.

·       #3 Diamond Battles is leading the team offensively, Battles has shot 18-of-47 for a 38.3 FGM. Battles is also shooting 50 percent from behind the three-point line on 6-of-12 shooting.

·       The Knights have recorded double-digit steals in three of their games. and through four games are averaging 10.5 steals per game.

·        The Knights have also turned over the ball 77 times in four games, an average of 19.5/game.

This will be the first meeting of the two teams in program history.
