POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team battled to a 2-1 loss against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
"Fantastic effort today, we continue to improve each game," said Head Coach Debs Brereton. "This team is so resilient and builds on every performance. We looked much better going forward and created several very good chances. It's only a matter of time until the team are rewarded for their relentless efforts."
NAU got on the board first in the 12th minute on a one-on-one. After battling another 18 minutes, the Lumberjacks tacked on another goal off a free kick in the 29th minute.
The Bengals didn't waste any time responding. Kaylyn Buchanan hit a solid cross and Bengal Forward Caitlin Crist connected a header to the back of the net. The two teams headed into the half with NAU up 2-1.
In the second half, the Bengals continued to press their offense but the NAU defense held firm and the match ended with a 2-1 NAU victory.
McKayla Wetsel had another strong day minding the net for ISU. Wetsel had six saves on eight shots faced.
Michaela Didericksen had two shots with one on goal. Crist had one shot with one goal.
"We enjoyed much of the possession and our quality ball movement allowed us to create some dangerous attacks," said Brereton. "Kaylyn Buchanan delivered a brilliant cross that was met from our cool and calm Caitlin Crist. She is excellent in the air and opened up her Bengal account in a commanding way. Our defense continued to be well organized and kept NAU, who have scored the most goals in our division, at bay."
NAU outshot the Bengals 13-5.
The teams face each other again Sunday afternoon for the second game of the series.
