POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State football team went toe-to-toe with the No. 2 team in the country, the Montana Grizzlies. Despite a valiant effort, the Bengals lost 28-20 on Saturday afternoon in Holt Arena.
The Bengals led 3-0 after the first quarter thanks to a 22-yard field goal from
Ian Hershey with 8:40 left in the first quarter.
Montana took a 7-3 lead with 14:09 left in the second quarter. ISU then countered with a 15 play, 53 yard drive that took 6:34 off the clock to cut the Griz lead to 7-6.
Montana scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the second half to lead 21-6 at halftime.
Montana's only second-half score was a touchdown with 6:50 left in the third quarter. Christian Frederickson cut the lead to 28-13 when he caught a 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:01 left in the game.
Sagan Gronauer then added a one-yard touchdown with 56 seconds left to make the score 28-20.
In Gronauer's first start of the season he was 23-44 with one touchdown and one interception and 260 yards passing.
Xavier Guillory caught seven passes for 86 yards and
Cyrus Wallace caught seven passes for 73 yards
Raiden Hunter carried the ball 12 times for 63 yards.
Charles Ike led the defense with 12 tackles and one interception. Jack Genvoa had nine tackles while
Terrance Jones and
David Rowe each had seven.
Idaho State had 381 yards of total offense while Montana finished 454.
Idaho State plays at No. 4 Montana State on Saturday, Oct. 8.
