POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State women's basketball went shot for shot with the University of Washington Huskies Sunday night in Seattle before falling behind in the end of the fourth and dropping the contest 39-56.
The Bengals (1-3) kept up with the PAC-12 conference Huskies midway through the 4th period, where only a five-point gap separated the two teams.
"This was a great experience for our young team," said Head Coach Seton Sobolewski. " I'm very optimistic about the team we can become. For three and a half quarters we were right there with them. Fatigue and those last 4/5 minutes made the difference."
UW got hot when they needed to and pulled away in the final five minutes of the game to secure the win.
The Bengals started the match hot, opening up a five point, 9-4 lead over the Huskies after Freshman Halle Wright hit two free throws for her first career NCAA DI points.
The Bengals kept pouring it on when they extended the lead to eight after Carsyn Boswell hit a three from deep behind the line. The Huskies kept pressing and the first quarter ended with a 12-10 Idaho State advantage.
In the second period, Laura Bello started to stretch her legs as she headed to a career night. The Bengals continued to trade shots with UW, who were able to retake the lead and hold onto it going into the locker room at halftime up 24-20.
Coming out of the Break, the Bengals didn't let up in the third, outscoring the Huskies 10-8 with five different Bengals scoring FGs in the period.
In the third, the Bengals shot .500 from the floor and held the huskies to 23.1 percent and 0 percent from three.
With 1:38 to go in the third, Kacey Spink grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up on the glass and in to tie the game at 30-30.
UW was able to get one more FG in the period and the Bengals headed into the final 10 minutes only down 32-30 in Seattle.
The final 10 minutes, UW was able to get hot when they needed and outscored the Bengals 24-9 behind 58.8 percent shooting from the floor.
At the end of 40, Idaho State fell to the University of Washington 56-39.
Bengal Bites
· Callie Bourne had nine points against the Huskies, she needs 13 more to pass the 1,000 point mark in her career.
· Laura Bello had a career night for the Bengals, the sophomore forward had 10 points and eight rebounds adding on three blocks and a steal.
· Turnovers hurt the Bengals, UW scored 20 points off of 18 Bengal turnovers.
· There were two lead changes and three tie scores in the game, The Bengals held the lead for 9:18 minutes of the contest.
