POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State University persevered through a slow shooting first half and successfully came back and defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 58-54 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
The Bengals move to 4-4 on the season and are .500 with three non-conference games remaining.
The first half was rough for the Orange and Black, the Tommies took an early lead and grew it to as large as 10 while cold shooting hurt the Bengals. At the end of 20, the Tommies had a 25-16 lead on the Bengals.
The second half proved that it's not how you start but how you finish. The Bengals came out of the locker room like a new team.
After going down 14 with 6:25 to play in the third, Idaho State started chipping away. Free throws by Finley Garnett, Callie Bourne and Bridee Burks along with FGs by Kacey Spink and Callie Bourne cut the Tommie lead to seven headed into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Working on a comeback, the Bengals needed a leader to step up, that leader this afternoon was Garnett.
Over the final 10 minutes , Garnett led the Bengals on a 17-10 run. With 4:11 left in the period, Carsyn Boswell hit a fast break layup to give the Bengals their first lead of the game at 41-40. Two team traded baskets for the final minutes of the quarter before, with 1:20 left on the clock, Garnett hit a jumpshot and tied that game for the final time in regulation.
The Tommies had a chance to win the game with an inbound play with two seconds left, but the Bengal defense stepped up, stopping the attempt. After 40 the game was tied 45-45 and the two
For the first four minutes of overtime, Idaho State and St. Thomas traded baskets. Tying the game four times and seeing three different lead changes.
Finally, with 28 seconds left, Bourne hit a long jump shot to put the Bengals up two. With 14 seconds left, Garnett was fouled and with Ice in her veins hit two free throws to close out the game in favor of the Bengals.
Down, 14 at one point, the Bengals surged back and earned the 58-54 overtime win over the Tommies.

· Finley Garnett set a new career high, scoring 25 points on 9 of 15 shooting from the floor. 19 of the points coming in the second half and overtime.
· Callie Bourne had her third double-double of the year, scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds.
· The Bengals controlled the glass, out rebounding the Tommies 47-38, a +9 margin.
· Eight of the 10 Bengals that saw action had a rebound.
· Kacey Spink and Carsyn Boswell had three steals each. Callie Bourne led the team with four.
